I mentioned before that I broke/wounded my BR-89, the one that came in the starter set, 29106. The engine answers to 30000 with the mobile station. The original delta controller died when I had my accident with a loose wire touching the engine as it went by the crossing that I was trying to set up. The delta control unit quit working; but, I got another starter set with a mobile station at that works fine. The BR-89 mostly works, with the exception of the lights no longer turning on and off.

Now the ghost. It happens mostly when the crossing is operating. Suddenly the BR-89 decides that it is time to start running at full speed, regardless of what the setting is in the mobile station. The first time this happened, it came off a siding and took out the middle of the fuerwagen train as it went by. The second time I was running it behind the fuerwagen and it decided to be a pusher.

I assume that for some reason the BR-89 decides it is time to run in analog mode and is running at max speed because that is the way the voltage is set in digital mode. Emergency stop will save the day if I don't have a beer in my hand and I'm looking at the track.

Do you think I should continue to use the BR-89? Is there some relatively simple fix?

I have had the same problem with my Thomas and Percy loks, together with the crossing. I haven't been able to find a solution either.

Sounds like an intermittent fault with the decoder. The fact that the light switching is not working shows that all is not well there. I would replace it with another cheap decoder.

I opened up the BR-89.

Note the drawing in the manual was not of much help. It shows a screw driver being held near the train with no indication of where to pry in order to release the top. A little arrow pointing at the two plastic latches would have been useful. But I digress.

The light appears to be an LED and nothing jumps out from the circuit boards. (One could hope for discoloration or an obviously broken wire.) I suppose there could be a cold solder; but, since it was running well before the accident, I suspect you are right about the partially blown decoder. Any suggestions about a replacement decoder?

Hi Ralph,

The decoder in this Hobby locomotive is probably similar to the one in "Thomas" or the 30000 Br.89.
I can't find the precise one in the MArklin database, but similar ones cost about 35 euros, which is probably more than the loco is worth.

If you do want to keep the loco in operation, your best bet would be a lokpilot decoder, costing in the region of 20-25 euros. Don't forget that if the light is an LED you will need to feed it through a resistor.

29106 is the Thomas frame with a new shell.
The loco works with #30000 from the database, but has nothing in common with the older #30000 loco.

Haven't seen one yet, so I don't know which decoder will fit.
Could be a special decoder PCB with resistors for the LEDs.

The loco probably has a DC motor, so the Delta decoders 6603, 66031, or 66032 sold separately will not work with this motor (and probably won't fit into the shell either).
Regards
Tom

The problem is in the magnetic field that's created by the coils in the crossing. The same problem was discussed on a Dutch forum (http://forum.3rail.nl/index.php?topic=11960.msg227944#msg227944), and it was solved by feeding the crossing with pure DC. It was tested with two 9 volt batteries, but a DC supply with a large capcitor (say 2500 #956;F) will also work.

Interesting. I installed a firefox translate program and took a look. I have much the same reaction! I theorized that there was some electrical phenomenon causing the problem; now I know what was doing it. Thanks!
