Since nobody else has anything to ask or say on this board.. I may as well start another thread... (that's three in a row!)

I just picked up this 4228 Rheingold set which I think will look great with the Blue Br10 I'm waiting on.. it's apparently all metal and with lighted interiors.

Anyone own this item, and have anything to tell me about it?? I'm going to be waiting at least two weeks for it, so I would love to have your insights into it's quality, and collectabiliy.

I paid (from what I can tell) a good price for it at $328+shipping, as I've seen them for upwards of $500, and in my case the set is new and unused...

Are there any other Marklin sets like this one that I should be on the look out for?

Thanks again all..

HI Sam,
Congrats on the new purchase! It is an absolutely beautiful set, and one of my favorites. I wouldn't trade it for anytihng and the little table lamps are sooooooo cool! However: It is not a runner! My only issues with the set are its running qualities. The axles do not stay in their trucks very well- however there is a trick to fix this (I can show you next time I am in Phoenix) The Current conducting couplers are a pain to connect and easy to bend etc... while at the same time making tight radius turns difficult. The result of which is the axles falling out of place and the train derailing. I would say it is just my set, but I have been through 3 of them now and they all have done it. The good news is since I switched to C track from M I have had little to no problems whatsoever. This being said, it is a real gem otherwise and I think you will like it more than that blue steamer you're getting!

Hi Sam,

Indeed it's a beauty, I pull it with an 18.4.

Unfortunately I have to agree with John that it's not the best runner. In my case one of the bogies derailed in a tunnel, without my noticing. It caused a short, and the protection of the trafo kept swithing on and off for a while, again unnoticed. During those periods of intermittent repowering, the short circuit caused so much heat, that the bogie pivot point got overheated. This pivot point is a metal pin in the plastic bottom of the car. The plastic deformed due to the heat, causing the pivot to tilt. I still have not had a chance to repair/replace. If I get a chance tonight or this weekend, I'll post a picture.

If it does not run well on my new future layout, it will become a show cabinet piece. With powered rails, the table lights are great!

Hi Sam
Well done on your purchasewink - I have this set and it is well made and a great addition. Must agree with the comments on those damn conducting couplers - use to drive me mad. And that applicator plastic thingy is pretty much useless. I found. Good set for long straights and gentle curves. I also just got the 26751 which has the same passenger coaches( I think) as the 4228, but I will keep that for display only.biggrin

Yeah, the messages I found with the search on this subject said much the same... I was hoping for a reprise.. I am using C-track which is encouraging, but I think this one will sit in the display case much more so than on the track. I don't want to keep it in the box in the hopes of selling it for a profit, as that takes the fun out of it..

On a side note, I wonder how it will look with the 37081 I am awaiting from Germany... the blue's may not match, but It may make for a good photograph.. even if it's not very prototypical...

IF I do run this, it will certainly remain on the "inside" track so as not to "free fall" like our venerable webmaster's set..

Hi Juhan,
I just wanted to let you know you aren't the only one! My 4228 took a dive 6 feet to the floor once! No real damage to the cars (thank god for carpet) but quite a bit more to my heart and nervous system!

Ouch Gregor! Can you order a spare part from Marklin to fix it?? or does it cost more than a new set?

BTW... do you put oil on the bogie pivot (shown above in your photo) for smoothness, or is that not needed?

Just got word about some couplers called RTS that are supposed to work better than the M* ones... it's going to take a while to get them from D.. so I'll report back on them in a few months..

I haven't realy invested time in finding out a way to fix the problem.
And I generally apply no oil to these pivots, the required movement is limited.

Replacing a Rheingolds platform won't be easy since the housing is made upon it by bending the metal around the platform. About the running characteristics, I've had troubles with it too, adding a little weight to every car solved the problem a bit... Still not a very good runner, but acceptable in my opinion.

Well it just came today, and I have a few disappointments or problems...

First off the box it came in was a bit worn for being a "new" item... but I can live with that... the bigger problems were all the wheels were coming off the axles, which again I fixed by bending the axle bogies a bit inwards and thus apply pressure on the axles, then the last problem I have is one of the lights on the back of the baggage cars (a red) is not working, and neither is one of the couplers on the #506 car.. If I take that car out of the consist, it all lights up, if I add it back in, everything forward of that car is dark!

HELP! Should I try to open up the cars? Is there an easy way to do this?

thanks guys

If it helps with any ideas, the offending car has apparently one functioning coupler as when I touch the exposed coupler to a wire, and the other end of the wire to the + middle rail, the wagon lights up! So the lights work, but there must be a circuit problem.

Did you get it through Ebay just like the Prussian Kaiser train ??
I like M-track and my things that run on it were built between 1959 and 1972.

You could use the car as first one in the consist, connecting the bad coupler to the loco. But more fun would be to repair it.

John, I got it from a private auctions, so no dealer help here....

Johann, yes, a Klaus Becker on ebay, nice enough guy, but the set had very loose bogies (I bent them all to tighten up, so the wheels stay in), and now this issue with the coupler.

Gregor, that is what Klaus (the seller) said to do, but it doesn't work, cause the car designated as the car behind the loc is without a CCC NEM pocket on one side, therefore it would be the same net result as leaving the original car where it goes.. I have John (5HorrizonsRR) coming over in a couple of weeks, I think we're going to open it up and see if it's just a loose solder job.. But since he's taken them apart before, I'll wait till he gets here before I open them.

They are beautiful to look at though, and apart when my Kaiser II's set comes, they'll display well right next to it.

Good point John,

It could have been worse I guess, but I don't think this is going to be a "pristine" collectors item.. I'll just run it and display it for now... And maybe down the road I'll come across another 4228 in "mint" condition.

Some comments......
I've had my 4228 since 1989, the first year it came out. The matching lok is #3618, a DRG lok. And these are DRG cars, so a BR10 is definitely out of era. BUT I always run what I like anyway, too.

I don't know where most of you run your cars, but I've had mine for over 15 years, and they still run well, with no problems. I did recently change to RTS couplers, and will do so for all my lit cars eventually. I'm gradually switching over, but with over 300 passenger cars to change, it's a long grind.

In fairness to those that have had problems, I do most of my running on the ETE modular layout with very gentle curves (2251 minimum), and all "sleek" switches.

Marklin has made quite a few versions of the Rheingold by now, but 4228 is probably still my favorite.

Thanks MrMarklin, good to know... I think I'm going to take a risk on the RTS couplers.. Can't be worse than the M ones. I'll also get a set for my 2681 set.

I have the new for 05 Rheingold set on order, but it's just not the same thing, and it's era IV I believe... but it's nevertheless pretty.

The M ones work OK, but they are really designed for a permanent layout set-up because as all of you have found, they are a pain in the @zz to deal with if you take the cars on and off the tracks. Definitely go with RTS.
