Hi.
I know that M* has the two video-wagon sets (49940 and 49941), but they come with quite a pricetag attached to them. Browsing around on eBay, I found some tiny wireless videocameras, and most of them at a very attractive price too. Does any of you have any experience with those for model train use? Are they any good?

I am very tempted to get one, just for the fun of it.

I don't have any information on the 49940, other than what I can find on the net. I seems to be the first version. It only worked on digital layouts. Then 49941 replaced it. The 49941 has its own battery, so it works on analog layouts as well.

I have got the 49940 two years ago after a visit in http://www.galleriabaumgartner.ch/ where i saw it on a layout.
It work fine, and it don't need battery. Only the price is terrific.[:(]
I tested the pin hole spy cameras, and they work very well too.
You can find them on ebay, search pin hole, in hong kong sold for 15$ biggrin

Hi!

My wife gave me such a pinhole camera system.

Here is the camera car. Still not finished. The camera is track powered.

Here is a catured picture. The camera has also a microphone. The picture has a low resolution, but is is quite o.k. when watched on a monitor.

Hans Dietrich: Very nice camera car, and picture really not that bad for just $15. That blue sphere in the back - diving equipment by Jaques Cousteau [:p] ?

Hi!

John: The sphere is part of the "octopus" ride made by Faller (I think).

The camera system was probably more like $100. It came with the camera, a 9V battery adapter, a track power adapter, a receiver. The camera has a resolution rated at 380 lines. So watching the picture is best on a small TV or on a computer monitor choosing a small window size. Also a brightly lit room may help. Our layout is in the basement. But the camera is color and the microphone picks up the click-a-di-clack of the track and the sounds like the saw mill. It is kinda cute.

Well, I went ahead and got one. I am quite impressed with the image quality, given the extremely small size of the camera. Now I only need to find a way to mount it, so it can get around on the layout. Oh, and I need to finish my layout too biggrin

Hi all,

Not sure if you know of this site, project Waldberg, but it is excellent. He has video soruced from the marklin video car and he now has a DIY (Do It Yourself) section on building a video car. No point id prviding more details since the site is so good I would be doing a disservice in trying to provide a summary.

Here is the URL of the DIY video car description and a sample movie http://www.floodland.nl/...in/info/elektro_en_6.htm

I've had a bit of fun on my far from finished layout, and I am truly amazed at the performance of such a small camera. It does require some light, but not as much as I have feared. Unfortunately, I ran out of battery, so I had to use an external power supply for the camera. It isn't easy to control a train and an extension cord at the same time biggrin
Anyway, here is a little glimpse of my first video-try:

Neat! Ain't it?

Because I too ran out of battery power, having the video car with track power pick-up is very convenient. But the battery allows to put on and use the video car on any HO lay-out.

Your camera has a good picture. Do you have sometimes interference (noise) with your signal even when running on battery. I suspect that this is caused by a little sparking from the loco at some spots on the tracks. Seems to happen mostly but not exclusively at switches.

Hans: Is it possible to power it from the track?

Yes, it is really neat.
I think I need to make a track-powered setup, as it really eats up that battery in no time. And yes, it would seem that I have a bit of interference from time to time, but I haven't noticed if they are related to switches or not.
The good picture quality comes from having enough light. I used a 500W lamp for the recordings.

Ron: The set I got included a power converter to convert AC/DC 16V track power to the 6V DC the camera uses. It is the piece with the blue capacitor shown in the video car picture.

Mikael: I experienced about two hours of battery operation. After that the picture gets very grainy. 500W!! Yup, those CMOS cameras are inexpensive but need a bit of light to work well.

The camera can work without the 500W light as well, just using the 75W bulb I normally use. The picture just gets a bit more grainy, and the colours aren't as nice.
My camera acts somewhat different to low-battery conditions. The first sign is a continuous loud buzz in the audio (which is why I have removed the sound from the first scene in my video). Then the colours start to oversaturate in green and purple. And finally it says plop, and the picture gets black and white (but in high-quality).

I have just finished the work on making my camera track powered.
I haven't tested it yet, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

Yes, it is a homemade power supply. It is ugly, but it works fine.

A track powered video camera, a poor man's speedometer...a very creative week it seems.
