Has anyone heard if Marklin has any plans to sell passenger cars for the PRR GG1?

Hi Paul,

That's my question, too. As I see it, you and me (when GG1 comes) have only the following options:

1. Pull PRR freight trains,
2. Pull the California Zephyr with the GG1 (I pull the California Zephyr with UP loks, hope no hard core railroader will ever see that),
3. Pull non-M* PRR passenger cars.
4. Pull another GG1 (double traction)

I have already asked that my local M* dealer what to do. He recommended option #4.

Regards

Hans Martin

I would go for the Intermountain heavyweight PRR passenger cars. I think they are prototypically correct. They are common on ebay, and any good model RR shop should carry them I would bet. I would keep the knuckle style couplers too.

Hello,
Does anyone already tried Intermountain coaches on Märklin rails ? What about the RP25 wheels ? Are there compatible Märklin or Roco AC wheels ?
I reproduce hereafter some information that I posted on a previous GG1 related topic :
On the other hand, for those who would like to haul passenger trains with their future Marklin PRR GG-1 ( if it can be fitted with Kadee couplers of course ! ), Intermountain Railway is manufacturing PRR coaches and baggage cars :

I usually like Intermountain's freight cars for their high quality but I never "tried" nor converted their passenger cars.
Pierre.

Hi!

In my experience, if I want to run cars securly, there is no other choice but to replace the RP 25 wheels with AC wheels. I bought Mehano AC wheels.

More specificly: The switches are the biggest problem.
- RP 25 wheels do not well on M-track, but I have heard that C-track is better because of the square track profile. Adding longer counter rails to the switches helps.
- The bigger the RP 25 wheels, the better they run. I have Rivarossi cars with RP 25 and they do fine.
- Cheap plastic RP 25 do better the prototypical metal ones because the plastic ones have often wider rims.

In the end only AC wheels gave a satisfactory running result on M-track.

Hope it helps ... Hans

I have no problem with RP25, even small wheels (such as in a Kato RSC-2 I converted to 3-rail) in any C track piece.

All RP25 fitted cars ( Athearn, Intermountain, Proto ... ) have derailled on my C-Track turnouts. So that is the reason why I convert US cars with Märklin and Roco AC wheels. No problems anymore ...

The solution for stopping DC-wheelsets to derail on the points of C and K-track switches is adding a thin piece a plastic. I used a transparent frontsheet commonly found with brochures.

Cut a small strip and glue it to the opposite gaurdrail. It's just enough to compensate the 0,2 mm difference between AC and DC wheelsets.

The photo a already modified guardrail and the tool holds an example of the strip used.

Paul,

To get back to your question:

Has anyone heard if Marklin has any plans to sell passenger cars for the PRR GG1?

I would not be surprised if we will see the cars in Z-scale this year, and in H0 next year.

Charlie.

Peter,

Have a look at my website. It's stil in Dutch, but the item you need to click on is "Modelspoor" and after that "Module". This leads to the page from which you can reach the current availible modulepages.

The next link is a direct link to one of those pages in which you see the construction of a stub module for the station. It's shows all the phase, from the bare wood to the complete module.

I've been reading this site for a while but just registered. Based on some early Amtrak brochures that I have, the GG-1 did pull Amtrak long distance coaches on the various Florida trains and the Broadway Limited itself. Of course the Marklin dome car would never fit in the Eastern Corridor tunnels, and I don't believe that Amtrak made much use of round-end observation cars either.
Having #4935 running in "Pennsy" colors with Amtrak equipment is correct because it was restored to Pennsy livery in 1977, six years after Amtrak took over the US long distance passenger trains. NJ Transit, the New Jersey commuter train operator, also used GG-1s to pull coaches obtained from western US railroads; they were never repainted. Thus, you could use the Santa Fe coaches behind the GG-1 as long as the train was headed to South Amboy!

Welcome Jeff, thanks for the history of the GG-1. Actually I did just that, I ordered three of the SF coaches, South Amboy, here I come! I would like to think that Marklin will be coming out with PRR coaches in the future.

They have a real GG-1 at the PRR museum in Strasburg, PA. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Actually, quite a few GG-1s have been preserved so there are many places in the US where they can be visited. I guess we in the States finally learned our lesson after letting so many steam locos go to scrap. Here's a site with quite a few photos of preserved GG-1s in different locations around the US:
http://www.hebners.net/amtrak/amtGG1.html

You can also see GG-1s at their ugliest, in the black paint used by Penn Central (immediate successor to Pennsylvania RR) and Amtrak.

One of my favorites is under the trainshed at Amtrak's Harrisburg PA station; this was the western limit for passenger GG-1s. The steel trainshed has a European feel to it. The GG-1 is right at home here though in the company of a preserved caboose. The trains were exchanged for steam or diesel power at this point. Freight GG-1s operated a few miles farther west, to the Enola Yard but the wires stopped at that point.
