I have a loc that tends to have a bit of excessive pickup shoe noise. It's my 39356 which is a Taurus loc with the c-sinus motor, and therefore rather quiet with the sole exception of the pickup shoe which makes a totally disproportionate amount of sound, even when compared to other similar locs I have like the BR152's... Is there a "trick" that you older hands at this know or use to silence or reduce the noise of this critical component?

Hello Sam,
See if you can exchange it for a Roco slider. I find these quieter. Sadly, I do not know if there is a conversion chart out there.

These Roco sliders are quieter but before buying and fitting one of these you could also check whether the original pickup shoe isn't bend. If so, it could be an explanation. |

Check this slider in comparison with another same slider. Sometimes there not exactly "straight". Also check the "pressure" on the track, also compare it with another one. This might help.

I swapped the shoe with my other (Very quite) 39340 loc, and it made no difference, which is really strange! The 39340 is still quiet, and the 39356 is still noisy... very odd. Thanks for the input anyhow guys..

Perhaps it is not the shoe, but where it is mounted or simply a nasty dry motor.. |

Since it's a C-sine loco I can't imagine the motor is the problem (never seen a problem like that before) Maybe it's due to the place where the shoe is mounted is a little closer to the track which results in a higher pressure on it and probably noise. |

I am going to take apart that bogie and do a minor overhaul of it (even though this is a new loc), just to see if there is anything odd... I am hoping that by taking it apart and putting it back together, it will fix the problem. Mind you, it's not that its too loud all on it's own, it just that it's a quit a bit louder than the other C-sine locs I'm running which seems odd.. I have another Taurus 39834 coming in a few months (new for 05 model), and I'll see if its an issue with the Taurus models, vs just an issue with my 39356. |

sometimes this happen at my loco, and I resolve modifing the profile of the pick up shoe.
It's enough 1/10 of mm. for modifify the noise, the central part of the shoe don't have touch the rail, but only graze it.

Very strange.... I took it apart, degreased it a bit, cleaned off the plastic parts with mild soap and water, and dried them, replaced the shoe and put it all back together and now it sounds fine... So I guess I'll never know what exactly I did to fix the problem! To double check that it wasn't the shoe, I placed the old shoe on the loc again, and it remained quiet... Bottom line, when in doubt... overhaul.

Well done Sam. We have a washing machine which sometimes wont start and all that is required is a light kick on the door and off it goes. Looking at the switches and wiring etc has brought no success but a kick in the right direction and all is well.
OK I know we dont do that to our locos but its great for other kitchen appliances.

I may have inadvertently done that very thing, as I applied a bit of pressure on the shoe when I replaced it... Maybe the brand new shoes, combined with the clearance of the bogie on this particular model are too much... a small adjustment my be the key. I get the 39834 in a few months, I'll get the chance to try it again.. |
