Does Marklin use a standard scheme for their decoder wiring? If so, where can I find it? Also, what is the best thing to use to shrink heat shrink tubing?

The wiring colors are in the installation instructions for the decoders. They are different from other decoders, so they are not "standard". I use 1/16" and 3/64" heat shrink tubing on the wires.

The best thing to use is a gasheated soldering gun. Portasol has those guns. They are small and easy to use and work on lighter gas. You can change the head for one which supply's heated air where you can shrink the tube with.

To shrink the wrap I use the soldering iron, contact point about 30 mm from the hot tip. It's hot enough there to shrink the wrap, and cool enough not to melt the wires.

Using a heat gun is more elegant, but I don't have one.

The one I have wasn't so expensive. Something like the order of €50, but I have to admitt that was some 10 years ago. At the moment the prices are around €100.

I am also using the gun for soldering smd's. And you can solder normal components as well.

I use my wifes portable hairdrier. Seems to work well.

Märklin decoders use these colours (I don't know about last years decoders from ESU).

rot/red = Fahrstrom Hinleiter / pickup shoe
braun/brown = Fahrstrom Rückleiter- Masse / wheels/chassis
grau/grey = Licht vorne Hinleiter / light forward
gelb/yellow = Licht hinten Hinleiter / light backward
blau/blue = Motoranschluß / Enginge
grün/green = Motoranschluß / Engine
schwarz/black = Rückleiter Allstrom- Motor / Engine return when field coil
orange = Rückleiter Funktionen / return for functions
braun-rot = Hinleiter Funktion 1 / f1
braun-grün = Hinleiter Funktion 2 / f2
braun-gelb = Hinleiter Funktion 3 / f3
braun-weiß= Hinleiter Funktion 4 / f4
weiß/white = Hinleiter DELTA-Funktion / function for Delta
violett = Elektronikmasse / decoder ground (normally unused)

Dave: Forgot to mention...I use a 3M heat gun for heatshrink. It is a two speed (I always use low speed when working in a lok) and has a reduction nozzle on it so I get the heat exactly where I want it. I don't know what the effect of excessive heat on the decoder would be, but it can't be good.

Hi Ron,

I have a heat gun as well, but wasn't sure if it was too powerful for shrinking it, so figured I better ask before ending up with molten mass of wires. I have a variable temperature soldering iron, so I think I will give it a try first. I'll probably invest in a hair dryer as well...the dog needs a bath and it's a bit chilly here, don't want the little wiener dog catching a chill. :)

This is the color coding of M* versus ESU/DCC/NEM, as we recently posted in another thread

Hi Bart,

Thanks for the chart... I've printed it out, laminated it, and taped it in my tool box. It will be a very handy reminder. Smile

Another very cheap solution for shrinking the tubes is ... a butane lighter.... I have used it for years, with very good results.
But you must be careful, to heat only the tube.
Sometimes I have put a tube over the whole decodder, without problem.

Josep
