Excuse me for posting a zillion different things on this forum, but my enthousiasm can be rather, um, unbridled at times biggrin .

I happen to love the artwork on these boxes and on the various catalogues from the same era! These drawings capture the essence of what makes a train, y'know, a TRAIN. I wonder if Märklin still owns the original drawings, who made them, how big the originals are, how many $100,- bills each would fetch at an auction and how they would look hanging on my living room wall [:p] !!

The boxes preceding these ones (the reddish cardbord ones sans pictures) are nice in a different sort of way, but the ones that came after the light-blue boxes are very disappointing, IMHO.

For a (Large) price, your Marklin dealer can get replacement boxes. Sometimes. I have ordered replacement boxes for items with defunct boxes or eBay items that did not have boxes. Good for the Loks to have a nice home.biggrin
The old Artwork boxes were just that: art. Current boxes look like engineering leftovers.[xx(]

By the way, I am looking for a few large posters to hang in my cube at work.Cool Any suggestions?

These 60:s boxes are the best... The pics are really dynamic and inspirational... My 4 childhood loks are in boxes like this, and I think they are a part of the Märklin "magic"... The later boxes are just plain boring...

Thomas,
Have a look on the NZ equivalent of ebay - www.trademe.co.nz - search on Marklin, or drill down through 'Models'. There is a fellow selling two large Marklin transfers (the type that affix to shop windows). BTW, this site always has Marklin stuff for sale, generally at reasonable prices. I recently bought a 1969 V200 in mint condition for USD140. For other Aussies and Kiwis, postage from NZ is a lot cheaper than from US and Europe.Smile

cheers,

Yesterday, I received the light blue 3065 box I got via Ebay.
The 3065 was my first loc back in 1965, but in the early 70s, the boxes were trashed either by myself or by The Mother,
probably since everything had been out for years on the permanent layout anyway [:0].

UserPostedImage

BTW, does anyone know how to interpret the code inside the light blue boxes;
which is the production date?
A few years back, I saw a comprehensive description of M* boxes on the web,
but I can't find it anymore.

I think Marklin would do well to go back to the 60's style of box artwork. I hated the clear cellophane variety of the 70's and 80's for the locos. The new ones show no imagination or effort, and model railroading is ALL about imagination.
I'd say the same for the freight car boxes - very bland.
The only good thing about the new boxes are the plastic cradles, but how long will these things hold up for? Will they last 40-50 years even if they are kept out of sunlight?

Couldn't agree more, they were art - just that [:p][:p][:p] (whereas today's covers are quite boring ... [xx(])
Perhaps M re-invents (as EXXON/ESSO most successfully did with their Tiger !!!) those nice covers which would match their beautyful locos in a perfect way Smile (the plastic cradles inside are o.k. - they're excellent protectors)

John

post scriptum: BTW, I'm very happy and satiesfied with M, now: Just a few examples: wanted great sounds in the BigBoy - done. Longed for the American Gator GG1 - she'll come. The new top-of-the-line locos - still metal. The new cars (although more plastics) are of outstanding quality. C- and K- track are perfect, and New Digital Systems is great - FIVE STARS from me [^][^][^]

Since Marklin is doing so many things to improve their line, they have got to get rid of the bland boxes, and put some artwork on them!
With so many advances in model railroading in every aspect from the 1960's, including graphics, there must be something they can do to make their product more atractive in the showplace/store. Who knows, maybe a better more attractive packaging could help influence the impulse buyer, or potential model railroader who hasn't made up his mind what brand to buy.
Hopefully someone at Marklin reads these post occasionally.

Hello to all,

nobody interested in maybe exchanging photos of 60's boxes ???? Or posting them here ?? I like them so much ... Also maybe we have some experts here, so we could solve specific collectors' problems concerning the boxes (age, different makes, and also fakes/replicas).

Any reply would be very welcome !!!

Thanks,

Johann

.... and even a lot more !!! A well kept 3015 goes for around 90 Euro ... A bit mad, sometimes, the boys .... Recently a rare one: 3001 with the loco painted green went for 75 Euro. But some times it is funny to see how cheap they are sold for, I don't know why prices differ so much.

I have to agree. It would be great to see these boxes of today dressed up. Maybe even a small booklet inserted (different for each class of lok of course) showing it in action in a few different regions of Germany. Then again, I suppose I can use the net to see just about any picture I like, but it would be a nice touch......just to feed the fire, so to speak!

Oscar, keep those scans coming. Nothing beats the art on those older M* boxes!! wink

Maybe I'm just odd, but I am perfectly happy with the current Marklin loc boxes, but then I've always been a bit more into minimalist looking stuff.

@ sam: you are perfectly sane, and not odd at all .... I suppose, it's me who's a little weird. It maybe has to do with that old fashioned Märklin shop in Hohenzollernstrasse in Munich, around 1965. I used to stand and watch outside the shopwindow, a little layout was on display, two trains running, and all the light blue boxes waiting to be bought ....

My memories, never mind ...

No, I totally understand... I have similar fond memories of many a changed product or item, that some think has changed for the better, whilst I long for the past version...

I actually feel that way about the old 1980's Mercedes SL's, vs the Detroit looking crap they are building now in Munich!

Hello Sam,

nice to read your thoughts. But another thing: may sound funny to somebody from your country, but I don't even own a car at all. My father though makes up for that: he has a Mercedes 250 SE from 1965 and a 450 SL (is convertible the word for the one without roof in summer??) from 1974. Actually he bought both of those in the U.S. They are better looked after there, he told me. And they were cheaper in the U.S. But: neither old or new ones ever were built in Munich. Mercedes come from Stuttgart, BMW do come from Munich. I live in Ulm, that's half way between ...

Have a nice time !!

Johann

Thanks Johann, I actually just sold my VW Passat and am going to pick up an E320 at my dealer with in a week (it's a special order)... I love their cars, but I'm not too happy with their very high end cars, they just don't seem to justify the $120,000+ prices that they are asking... where as the 500SL of 1986 that my Uncle bought for $59,000 was worth every penny... and that was a lot of money back then!

I agree that the SL's especially are well looked after here, you'll rarely see a bad shape model, they are basically becoming collectable..

On the subject of boxes... I just bought some older (1980's) Roco Era III Express Train cars to go with a new Steam Loc that I orderd, and the Roco Boxes look like a total throw back to the 1950's... I much prefer the Marklin from that time...

Why this picture, why now ?? Well, I am experimenting with a digital camera for the first time, and I'm in need of tricks to maybe improve things ....

Enjoy the photo, though ....

Hans
I like M-track and my things that run on it were built between 1959 and 1972.

Those are some extraordinary boxes. Another reason to love the old analog engines-you get such a beautiful box with some. M* ought to pay attention to this. Great collection Hans!

I'll say agin that the new style boxes are unimaginative, uninspiring, and just plain boring. bring back the old 1960's style with great artwork!

I really don't think you can improve a photo when the subject is of such intense interest that nothing else matters!

I wanted to say thank you to all your nice congratulations. Please do not believe that I am pretentious, I just wanted to share the photos ...

Re the above picture: note that the "steps" on which the locos can be seen are built from passenger car boxes (filled ....). I thought that would look nice!!!

These are not all locos, as told in a different thread some more reside at my parents' house.

Many regards,

Hans

Hi Hans,

Once again beautiful [:p].Your collection is to a train enthusiast like a "Picasso" would be for artlovers.
I see a few of locos on your photo I wanted as a child [:p]

Kind regards
