Hi!
I want to use a Digitrax DCC decoder in a Fleischmann loco. The manual states that for connecting the lights, I should use the (blue) function return. However, the loco lights have chassis grounded sockets so I am sure that I should not use the function return. The manual says that if I do not want to use the return I should consult the "Digitrax Decoder Manual". But no such thing is on their website.

Does anybody know if I can just connect the lamp wires (yellow and white) to the lamps and use the chassis ground without frying the decoder?

Thanks ... Hans

Well,
I don't KNOW, but I think it's the same as with other decoders. When using chassic the effective voltage less, meaning that less power is drawn. So there should normally not be any problem with frying...

Manfred: Thanks, that's what I needed.
Lars: Yes. The manual does explain to connect the front light(white wire) to right track and the rear light (yellow wire) to left track but, however, does not discuss chassis ground. But then either side becomes ground. So I tried it anyway and it works fine. Only thing to look out for is to make sure to use the correct speed step setting (14/27/28 and so on) on the IB to have lights. I also tried function return (blue wire, lamps disconnected from ground) and the lights are a little brighter, just as you predicted.

Thanks for the fast help ... Hans

Hello Hans, simply connect white to forward and yellow to backward lights and leave blue isolated.
Blue is the + pole of the internal rectifier and could damage the decoder if touches chassis.
