There are two main shops in New York and they're both on the same street. They are Manhattan Trains,(14 W. 45th St. ( 212) 840-8700) and The Red Caboose, located across the street. In my humble opinion, you will find better prices on the Internet, but there's nothing like going to a real train store. I usually visit these stores as part of my New York experience. The tax in New York is 8% and unlike the VAT, I don't think you can have it rebated upon departure from the US. Hope this helps. Bruce

I've been to Manhattan Trains, which Bruce is referring to. As a European, even if you could deduct 50% of the price as VAT, it would not be a good deal... Manhattan is expensive as such, and Manhattan Trains is too. Their stock of Märklin locos is poor, mostly 30xx and some 36xx locos, hardly no 37xxx or 39xxx locos. I thought I could make a good deal on U.S. scenic stuff like Woodland, but all I brought from the store were some MR newspapers. But visiting the shop is a nice break from the Manhattan life, and knowing now that the Red Caboose is cross the street (thanx Bruce), I will probably visit the place again some time. Funck |

Hi Doron Just as Peter said, be careful - NY is really very expensive [xx(] (so I've to buy most of my M stuff from Europe ...) Never mind about age, it's o.k. - being 52 and feeling great Have a nice time in our Big Apple and don't forget to visit Brooklyn (AND BROOKLYN BREWERY [:p] !!!) John |
