Hi all,
When referring to a visit to Märklin in 2001 in the "Märklin CEO-topic", I remembered asking the Märklin tour guide about the amount of Platinum Millenium Crocodiles that were actually sold. This was a € 35.000,- version of the crocodile with ruby lights and a body out of pure platinum.
The guide was very secretive about the whole project (which wasn't produced in the Märklin shops), so I was wondering: - Does anyone know how much were sold ? - Does anyone have the loc, or know someone who has ?
Have fun, Gregor

Hi Gregor!
My modellrailwaydealer here in Norway bougth one for him self. The price for it is about the same as my car, but very impressive work of art! He have it in the safe i think, and it's for sale if you have 250000 nkr, or about 28000 Euro. It's the only one in Norway, so i guess not to many was produced?
Best regards mav

From a long term investment point of view it should be a winner. Imagine what it will be worth in 15 years or so ??? As opposed to stocks/bonds/etc. you can avoid income taxes on the gain if you structure the transaction appropriately.
I am looking forward to Marklin's 150 anniversary to see if they are going to offer something similar.

if I bought something like that (mind you that assumes I would have the money, which I don't) that loco would wind in a very safe place - buried with me after my wife killed me! I'd still love to see one - especially one running.

Well, i think this a superb model, i only saw it in the brochure but i think if you have the U$25000 that it costs, you may have a lot of money and in my case perhaps i will keep it in a safe place and in a more careful way that i usually do, but she has to run on the layout like all the others do. Don't matter of it cost and if they're made of plastic or platinum, locos are made to run. |

It would be a wonderful thing to see. Did we ever determine how many were made?

After I buy this loco I will fly with my private jet to London Heathrow, visit Selfridge's at Oxford Street and buy one of those diamond/platinum hand made cell phones. It would be nice talking to the phone while operating the loco on my 50m x 50m layout...[xx(]

A picture of the platinum crocodile would look nice on the display of that platinum phone...

Speaking of pictures, here's the one we are talking about! The ruby and platinum MAR32000! I think that this crocodile does not suffer with the body removal malfunction of the standard model... |

Based on the balance between fantasies and actual data in this topic I guess that indeed a very, very small amount has been produced...

Well, for you guys who missed a chance to buy one, and for the Z-scalers among us, there will be a set of three steamers in Z. One 18 carat gold, one silver, one bronze. Diamonds as headlights, rubies as taillights, and for the price they even decided to put 5-pole motors in. It is a new item 2004. Priced somewhere around $5.000.

My understanding was that less than 200 were sold!
Wonder what the return was!
Expensive learning exercise?
