Greetings all! If I haven't said it yet, I'd like to say that this is the best modelrailroading forum I've been associated with since I've been online. everyone here is so actively involved and extremely helpful! Seems like every time I log on I find a new idea. Anyway, to my question. I just managed to get the loco that I'd been wanting since getting into Marklin railroading. It's the 3003 2-6-0. The one I got has an external reverser switch on the boiler and has "Marklin" on one side of the cab and "3003" on the other side. Also they are raised instead of being stamped on. Can anyone give me some idea of how old it may be? It's running pretty well so far, but I think it could use a new set of brushes. Seeing as how I only paid $50.00 for it including shipping, I think I did ok on it. I'm happy so that's what counts. :) Any info will be greatly appreciated. Cheers!
New to Marklin but not the hobby. :)

A great loco the "prairie pony", with the information you give to us, we can put it only in a great period of time, if you could put a picture of the box, we can be more accurate...

And what does the markings on the tender say? "Märklin" on one side and "FM 809" on the other, maybe? Did it come in a light blue box with that "speedy artwork painting" and styrofoam inset?

If it has 1 lightbulb with a plastic light diffusor to 3 front lights, and the tender markings mentioned, it is exactly like my first loco - a 3003 bought by my father for Christmas 1963... This itches my nostalgia nerve and many fond childhood memories come back to me... Smile

If it has separate lightbulbs it is a 50:s lok, otherwise a 1960-64 lok... From 1965 it had a DB signet, and the lever was scrapped from 1966 and onwards. If the tender markings are like I suggested, it's probably produced in 1960-62..

Nice picture Juhan, well my 3003 is a 1960 one, bought by my father in those years (she is older than me[:p]), she's still running perfectly and now she has a PD-101 on it.

Well,I looked and it's just as you said. It has "FM 809" on one side of the tender. Marklin on the other. It also was in it's blue box with foam cradle and the artwork of it speeding along. So I guess now I know how old it is. Almost as old as me! :) The only problem I'm having with it is sometimes it doesn't want to change direction. Sometimes when I try to reverse it, it sits there and buzzes. Would a new set of brushes help with that or is there something else I should do?
New to Marklin but not the hobby. :)

Bill: i think a new pair of brushes may help, also a good cleaning and lubrication have to be done.
After that you may have to regulate the tension of the spring of the reverse unit so the change of direction will take place smoothly. Also you may want to install a decoder such a PD-101 wich needs no further alterations of the AC motor.

New brushes and a new relay spring + some cleaning & oiling will probably make that gem run like it did in for me that magical Christmas Eve in 1963... Smile

I converted mine with a Lenz LE900 + 2 diodes, which is described on the site, but it is due for a 60903 conversion any day now so it can really run with pride along its modern digital cousins and have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of... Smile

Well, I ordered a set of brushes for it yesterday, and I also cleaned the reverser contacts and adjusted the spring which has helped alot. I figure the brushes should give it a more consistent speed range than it has at the moment, Though it does run right well as it is. And it has the distinction of being the most "mature" loco on my roster! :)
New to Marklin but not the hobby. :)
