I have been playing with traincad (www.traincad.com) and noticed the C track files have not been updated with some of the newer part numbers(and of course, since it is freeware the invitation is there to create and send).

Does anyone know how to create new track stencils for this program? It is, for me, a learning curve.

The track libraries for traincad are simple text files and can be edited easily.

A straight piece is defined e.g. with:

straight "236.1 24236" 236.1

The characters within the quotes is the name showed in the menu. the value to the right is the length.

A curve is defined by e.g.:

curve "24530" 643.6 30.0

where the first number after the quotes is the radius and the second the angle.

A turnout is defined by e.g.:

Turnout "24671" 77.49 360.0 30.0

where the first number after the quotes is the length of the straight track, the second number is the radius of the curved part and the third number the angle of the curved track. (Right turns have negative angles). The curved turnout has to be composed by one turnout symbol and one ordinary curve since traincad has no real support for curved turnouts.

A crossing is defined by e.g.:

Cross "24620" 188.3 24.3

where the first number after the quotes is the length of the straight tracks and the second number is the angle between the tracks.

Hi jocoyn, All,

I've used traincad extensively, and whilst I think it is an excellent product, it does not have the facility of "interacting" with one's track inventory, to tell
<ul><li>"how many pieces of track do I still have left to use"[:p], or </li><li>"how many pieces of track do I need to buy (and at what cost[V]) to create this layout"Smile. </li></ul>

This is handy, since the choice of track to use can be heavily influenced by what is on hand, especially when the inevitable modifications to a layout are being madewink.

To help with this, I've put together a simple spreadsheet (with macros) which automatically reads a track-list file from traincad, and produces lists of "remaining" and "required" tracks, including price (from several vendors[:0]). (Track inventory is entered only once).

It is tailored specifically to my needs, but if anyone is interested, I'd be happy to share it!

regards,
John

Hi perz,
Quote:

I think we are saying the same thing, but Traincad supports curved turnouts with a geometry which is not consistent with Marklin. I use the following description in the track library:

text "curved turnout R1"
Turnout "24671" 77.5 360.0 30.0 0.0
Turnout "24672" 77.5 360.0 -30.0 0.0
curve "fudge R1 30" 360.0 30.0

Then, as you point out, the Marklin curved turnout becomes the combination of a "Traincad curved turnout" and the extra piece which I have called "fudge" (so that it does not count as a physical track in the tracklist - see my post above...)

regards,
John

Thank you all -- very much I will try this weekend to do this.

BTW my name is Nancy Jocoy and I am very new to all this -- my only experience with trains is playing with an old DC set in our basement in the 60's as a child.

John, I played with this and what I am getting is that if I add a 360 radius / 30 degree piece to the 24671 or the 24672 turnout I get the equivalent. ie I do not really need to edit the library just use these peices but, if I use your spreadhsheet (interested) it will tell me I need two pieces instead of the one?

I see that that TurnoutB (curved turnout) expects two different radii of track peices to connect instead of the same as in Marklin.

I have made some changes and additions to the Marklin C track library on traincad and would love to have someone else try it and comment (reality check) before I send up

Any takers..?

Hi Nancy,
I'd be more than happy to try it for you! You could e-mail me the file.

regards from a hot and sunny east coast of Australia!
