I have just installed my first 5211 so that I can use the IB to operate some of the turnouts on my layout.

I decided to try to save some of the "digital" power by utilising my old 32VA transformer to feed the "E" socket on the 5211.. (I have not got around to having a separate feed for the turnout lights!)

When I use the IB keyboard to manually switch one of the turnouts all of the lights on the turnouts connected to the 5211 go out momentarily while the button is pressed and the solenoids switch the selected turnout.. I have several other turnouts connected directly to the 52VA (Yellow wire) transformer and none of these dim when I use the 7272 control box to switch one turnout..

Below is how I have the 5211 wired with the two transformers.. Is this correct? Should I use another 52VA transformer instead of the old 32VA? How should the second 5211 be wired?

Hi Adrian,

You don´t need a separate "earth"(brown) cable from the 32VA to the 5211,instead connect the brown output from 32VA to the brown output of the 52VA and save some cable. You keep the cable between yellow output on 32VA to 5211(E,red dot).Next 5211 you connect from the output(red and brown dot close to E) of your present 5211 to the input of next 5211.
I don´t know if this will solve your problem with dimming lights but I think it´s worth a try since it is just one cable that needs to be re-located.(Brown from 32VA to brown 52VA instead of brown 5211).

Regards,

Mats P

Would it be as easy as the old transformer not supplying enough power?

What happens if you switch the two transformers?

Thanks Mats... I will relocate the brown wire as suggested...

Charlie, at the moment the 5211 is the only thing connected to the 32VA.. I guess the three turnouts are also connected.. It's not possible to swap the transformers as the 32VA unit will not be able to drive the IB.. My dealer has a 6003 in stock - might be a good time to buy this..

Thanks everyone.

Well, just connect the switch directly to your 32VA transformer. Momentarely of course, and see if the lights dim. It would tell you if the transformer is the culprit.

The E is the so-called EXTRA. Perhaps, it may be helpful is you connect one live from the 6003 to the E.

Same output, so may do it.

Before doing this: Be sure to disconnect feed cable from 32VA otherwise you will get a BIG SHORT.See more under "Operation related" in "Don´t do this".

Hello Adrian.
To me the behavious seems pretty normal, and the wiring is correct (but I also agree withMats P that it could be made easier. Make sure that there is a brown cable connecte to the track near the turnouts in question, with good cupper connection to the 32 VA transformer. That could enhance the light a little; but also take some "switch" power.

You could use a "Power Module" with a separate transformer to feed the E; this is how Viessmann call a simple full wave rectifier; but I don't think it will change the blinking.

The best thing to do, and really easy, is to feed the lamps from a separate transformer. It's really easy to install a new cable for the light underneath, and cut the connection between lamp and solenoid. Then you could regulate the brightness too, by using the red sockets of a transformer.

Regards,
Lars

Thanks again everyone..

I think I may have another look at feeding the lamps separately..
