Does anybody have information about a fire that has broken in the depot of Nürnberg ? At the news today, there were said that a lot of old and unique engines burned. An incalculable loss ! |

My son and I will be in Nurnberg this December. We were planning to revisit the museum. Guess that's out, now. |

Let us hope they can reconstruct some of those engines. Anyway, some were already copies of original ones, no ? |

I hope too they can restore some of them. One would think an all metal steamloco can be repainted, so that it at least looks as it was before. I fear the worst for the diesels and the electrics though... They are less though than an iron workhorse

The museum itself is not hit, but the depot in another part of town where working loks were parked... |

None of the engines who where in the fire can ever be restored. They will probably have to be scrapped on-site, where they are now. They cannot even be towed somewhere else.
I don't know much about the history of German steam engines, but the diesels and electrics I am very fond of. The loss of the V80 and the E-locs, especially, seems tragic. Thankfully, there are other V100 and V200 locos around in good condition, if I recall correctly.
What a shame, such a loss. I wonder what caused it.

What a luck! (If you can call it luck) Take for example the S 2/6, there was only one of these machines build... Anyway, it's horrible to see what happened to all these great pieces of history and restoration work. |

Seems the loco of the Adler set is at least salvagable. The cars they can rebuild, but still a shame to lose something like that

I think chance of restoration of steamers would depend on how hot the fire heated the boilers up to - if the boiler plate lost its temepr and became too soft then they would have to be scrapped most likely. the sheet metal on the electrics and diesels would not be as critical - maybe some heat buckles and physical damage. its all question of money.

Was on a business trip to Nürnberg today and passed the destructed lok depot. Huh, what a horrible picture. The images in the newspapers and on the web are unable to give a true impression on that giantic hill of scrap that I saw. I am pessimistic that they can save or rework anything that was in the depot.
Fortunately I also saw the BR 38 on a side track. Not damaged as it seems.
