Has anyone built the New River Mining Company (http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/933-3017)and used it on a layout?
If so, did you use C or K track?

Hello Ulf,
I don't have that specific kit but several other from Walthers. Usual quality is equivalent to products from well known European makes ... because they are mostly manufactured in Europe (some kits are manufactured for Walthers by Kibri, for instance). Even instruction sheets are printed on A4 size papers instead of Letter format !
Of course, if you would like to add a realistic look, you will have to paint, weatherise and add some details but that is just like for any other kit.
Have fun with that kit ... and please post pictures and report when completed.
Pierre.

I guess you need K track to make better room for wagons.

With the slim turnouts the track spacing is ok.

Following Pierre's example, I moved the pictures to this topic...

Many, many window bars/mullions to paint [xx(]
UserPostedImage

Plenty of pieces. These (walls) have been painted, dirtied and rusted with Polly Scale paints (reefer gray, rust, black)
UserPostedImage

First part with windows glued. umpteen more to go...

Woodland scenics "Coal Mine Run" added just for the look Smile

UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

Roof (most of it...) in place
UserPostedImage

Do I need more weathering? Probably...
UserPostedImage

Experimenting with some broken windows, a bit hard to spot in the picture...
UserPostedImage

Coal tumbling didn't work as I wanted (dust wouldn't stay on [:(]) so I added a wash of Polly Scale Dirt to the windows.
UserPostedImage

An more rust on the steel plates
UserPostedImage
Next step is a wash of black and then I'll airbrush some more 'Dirt' or 'Earth' all over it. When I'm done the coal cars will look too clean next to this Coal Mine...

You will certainly have no longer water leak in roof !

Once again, I really like the rust on the corrugated steel !

Hi Ulf,

A colleague mine owner of yours appears in the May issue of Model Railroader. I prefer your version of the weathering.

Do you have access to MR or are you interested in a scan?

Nice work Ulf ! Loved your interest in the details like the filling of the roof gap - I do not know the Humbrol filler. Is it like the Tamiya body putty ? Good result anyway.

I'm also interested in your rust weathering ! What paint do you use, and what procedure ? Looks very realistic ! Congratulations!

Bob

I use the Tamiya putty. Two applications are usually needed to have a flat surface. Is it the same with the Humbrol putty, Ulf ?

For these gaps it was enough with one 'coat'. I use a painters spatula to apply just in the gap (too much filler and it starts to eat away the plastic...). When it's dry I use a fine sand paper. A second application would have made it very smooth, but I want it to look rust attacked Smile

I use Polly Scale 'rust'. The rust is applied normally and randomly. After the rust is applied I add water to thin it out.
I tried dry brushing at first, but it didn't get into the 'crevaces' the way I wanted...

After the rust is in place, I add a wash of flat black (90% water).

It is an acrylic paint produced by Floquil under the Poly Scale brand (# 414323).

If you don't like acrylics, Humbrol # 113 also gives excellent results.

Ulf, where do you get all those cool paints from? I've been looking around in Norway, but the only reasonable supply of acrylics I can come across (for plastic building kits that is), is the Tamiya series, and they lack quite a few colors I want/need.

Also, where'd you get that Humbrol model filler? Just straight from the US, or is there some cool store in Sweden that has all that? ;)

Thats one empressive structure. Seems like the height of C-rails does not pose a problem. Great weathering.
Unfortunatly my layout does not hold space for such a large building, Howerver plans for a scratch built, size adjusted "look alike" is in the planning. Looking forward to see yours in situ at your layout.

Just ordered the new river mining company structure knowing theres no room for it on the layout. However, theres a cure for that.
After a bit of surgery, the kit will hopefully fit like a glove in a corner of my layout. I just love the things that you can find on the internet! Smile
