Hi.

While waiting for my BR 44, I managed to acquire a nice looking and running BR 01 (3048) from the local QXL. It was already digitalized with a 5-pole motor as well as a smoke generator.

However, I have found that the front bogie is shorting when passing my curved turnouts (the only turn-outs I have on my small oval). Expecting that the higher pukos are the source. In the bottom picture it is clear to see, that the front wheels have burn marks. In order to eliminate the shorting I placed a piece of tape on the lower surface of the bogie. Surprise - it worked - no more sparking. So for now the problem is minimized but not solved.

Is there an issue with the very old locos running on C-track?

The front bogie with burn marks and tape attached:

Check the wheel distance. I had the same with an old nohab (same burnmarks on the wheel of the bogie with the slider). I managed to completely fix it by enlarging the distance to the correct value.

There was a thread in here somewhere about that, with a discussion about the correct wheel distance dimensions, but I can't seem to find it. AFAIK It should be around 14.0mm for Marklin, and around 14.2mm for NEM/DC trains.

Here is one of Henrik's:

<br />One of the reasons could be the gauge; Märklin normally needs 13.8-14.0 mm inside space between the wheels, while the DC-norm is around 14.3mm. This is the most common reason fro derailments (on switches).
I think you are spot on, thanks. I measured the distance (back to back of the bogie wheels) on both my brand new BR 64 and the old BR 01. The BR 64 measured 14,1 mm whereas the BR 01 measured only 13,6 mm. I will try to increase the distance and see what happens.

Thanks John. It is heavy. Looking forward to make it run properly by adjusting the wheel distance.

Oops - forgot to follow up. When the wheel distance was corrected the sparking was gone.
