NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS AND REPORTS

Below are the initial  Newspaper Death Notices which first appeared in the newspapers on Wed 2nd & Thursday 3rd January 2008.

The first article to appear was titled "Tragedies of Summer". This featured on the front page of the Dominion Post on Thursday 3rd January. A passing comment that I made to the reporter about Steven being a heartbreaker actually came out rather hauntingly as the closing paragraph. This was not intended to read quite that way but it turned out to be very true.

The Wanganui Chronicle ran a story (incorrectly stating the driver had died) on Friday 4th. "Man with broken legs crawls for help after crash"

The Kapiti Observer ran this article on Monday 7th. "Friends farewell Cookee"

And The Taranaki Daily News ran their article on Wednesday 9th. "Plunge survivor wants to make it to mate's funeral"

The most recent article to appear was in the Dominion Post featuring Steven's friend Matt on January 22. "The pain didn't matter. I had to get us out of here"

We are not aware of any other articles but I will gladly add them if you can give me details.

UPSETTING?

I am only too aware that some of the articles above and the pictures below will be upsetting for some people, not least family and close friends.  We live with it every day.

What else can I say?, this is the harsh reality of the tragedy on our roads when young people make unwise or foolish decisions involving the use of cars.

Here is where it happened, you can clearly see the scenic, but unforgiving terrain.

In March 2008 Steven's family and friends placed a bright yellow memorial cross at the exact point the truck left the road.

Omahina Road is about 20-30 minutes inland from State Highway 1 via the "Upper Okutuku Rd" turnoff, about 4km south of Waverly.

PLEASE, next time you get into a car, remember these articles, the pictures, imagine the scenario, try to feel the pain of those who have lost someone so very precious to them.
