4731 & 4532 Railway Crossings

4731 Straight Crossing - double lane AMS track 4532 45° Angled Crossing - single lane AMS track

4731 was introduced in the 65/66 catalogue (page 9).  This track piece has a single H0 rail track crossing at 90° over a double-lane section of AMS roadway. A centre rail is provided for users of Märklin 3-rail M-track (along with the red connecting wires and tabs), but the two brass rails are isolated to enable use with other 2-rail systems such as Fleischmann, Rivarossi etc. This track section remained in the catalogue until 1980.

The 45° angled crossing 4532 first appeared in 1970 as part of the new 4005 Road-Rail set and also as an individual item.  The all-plastic railway track section resembles Märklin M-track but introduces a brass connector plate to enable connection to the new Märklin K-track. As with the 4731 section both outer rails are electrically isolated to suit users of 2-rail systems. The K-track tabs may need to be bent or removed for use with other tracks and may already have been removed on used track sections.  The AMS track section is single-lane only although two can be joined to replicate a normal double-lane track.

With the 4731 section, two of these can be combined to make an attractive unguarded level crossing.

Ideally these crossings would be used on conjunction with the  4038 "St Andrew's" warning light and for extra precaution the AMS approach sections would be electrically isolated to prevent vehicles entering the cross when a train is passing. This could be achieved via a relay activated by the approaching train, the same relay being used to activate the warning lights and cut AMS track power.

Suggestion Wiring Schematic (fully automated)

As built, the rail track section has a copper plate fitted for electrical conection to Märklin K-Track. This sheet shows that if M-track is to be used, you must bend the copper tabs down so that they do not contact the M-track metal trackbed, otherwise you will have a short-circuit. Be careful not to break the copper plate off.

If you were wanting to use Marklin C-track, I would suggest a C-M adapter section would be the easiest and most reliable.
