What is the difference between the "soft drive c-sine" in the 39121 item, and the one in my 39120 E-10.2 loco? The pictures of them look the same in the marklin schematics.

Hi Mike,

The 39120 has the original small C-sinus motor while the 39121 has the new SDS drive. This may not be immediately apparent from the outside but the electric motors have different rotors for instance.
Märklin has a nice explanation of the way the SDS operates on their website.

As a side note the 39120 may be eligible for an update of the electronics because some of these "older" small C-sine drives may suffer from erratic driving behaviour due to sensitivity to voltage drops on the track.

Kind regards
Guus

The model 39120 and 39121 has the same motor wink

It is the driver pcb that is different on the models Cool

Hi Pål,

For all I know the motors of the two differ and this is somehow confirmed by the locomotives description on Märklins website.
On the other hand I remember a discussion on which type of motor has been intalled in the former E 10.
If I remember correctly there may be two version one with the old type and one with the SDS albeit with old electronics.

Correct me if I'm wrong please?

Kind regards
Guus

Hello Guus Smile

If you look at the spare part list for model 39120 and 39121 you will see that both models have
a motor with number 230592 so the motor is the same in both models but the electronics are different [:I]

When did that happen? The database has not been updated as it shows the 39120 with a compact C-Sinus and the 39121 with SDS.

I opened them both - and saw no difference. Both behave much the same.
My 39120 is rather new and is not sensitive to track voltage changes, but OTOH it has no SDS sticker on the box (which the 39121 has).

My track voltage sensitive c-sine locos (one with big c-sine) will travel to Göppingen later this month - I'll let you know if converted locos behave different than before ...
Regards
Tom

Thank you all! The electronics difference makes sense to me. My 39120 performs well. I figure if it works fine, don't fix it?

It's what I've noticed too,but I have my doubts whether the motors always really have been the same.
See my answer on Brians post.

Hi Brian,

I too am confused now. The 39420 Re 4/4I has the very same motor part number:
26..................................................... Motor 230 592.
And this locomotive definitely has the old small C-sine installed.

Since both motors only differ internally and have the same dimensions, could it be that Märklin after abandoning the old small C-sine just didn't bother to give the new motor another part number, because they're interchangeable anyway?

Just my two pennies.

Kind regards
Guus

I ran my 39355 Obb 1116 Taurus today, and 39573 103. The original c-sine is a great runner. I doubt we will see many more new locs. with this, unless they are updates of previous ones. They seem to be moving to double cardanic drive. Ok by me I suppose. The 39120 is super quiet and smooth. I'm sure some wil miss the famous Marklin WHIIIIRRRRR.

I was wondering why Marklin uses the Maxon motor in the dutch diesls (MAK) etc. but nothing else, save 1 scale.
