Hi All,

What are the recommeded operational practices for cleaning the contacts and the rails of old K + M tracks? I have read that the very expensive Centreline car is a good product to use with Goo Gone. How true and accurate is this information? Has anyone of you tried this product successfully? Is teflon grease used for track cleaning? I have read that its properties, such as lower friction, non drying, low viscosity, etc. are ideal for smooth and effective running of trains. Is this correct? If so, which product would you recommeded? Generally, do you place on track cleaning car ahead of the engine wetted with cleaning agent to clean the tracks and one right at the rear without the cleaning agent to efficiently remove all of the dirt, grime, muck, etc.? How often is cleaning of tracks done?

Lots of questions and awaiting a continuous line of feedback and comments on this topic from all of you.

best regards,
Ranjit

Teflon grease is great for gears in a loco, and makes them run smoother longer. It is *not* intended for track cleaning. The idea of the teflon is to stick to the metal so it gets as slippery as it can be... If applied to the track, you might get troubles going uphill... <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

When it comes to solvents for cleaning, others can give better suggestions than I can... My suggestion is industrial alcohol...

A friend uses the Centerline car and it works very well.Goo Gone has to wiped from the rails after you use it as it leaves a slippery residue.

I use isopropyl alcohol in my Herkat cleaning wagen.

Hi All,

Do any of you have experiences with the Herkat track cleaning car? How good is it compared with the Centreline Products car, and others such as, the CMX+ HO car, Aztec Trident HO car, etc?

Is isopropyl alcohol the industrial alcohol that has been mentioned in this topic? Or is it another type?

Anxiously awaiting your valued feedback and comments.

best regards,
Ranjit

I am using the Herkat car for cleaning my C track layout! It's working quite good I would say but I cannot compare it with others!

I have a locomotive pushing it around and so far I had no problems!

Of course when I used it for the first time I mixed up the valves and it was spilling cleaning fluid around but the situation was reversible.

There was another similar topic sometime ago so have a look there as well:

Hi

How good is the Roco wagon for cleaning C-track? Is it too abrasive? Does anyone know?

How often could and should be used?

Cheers,

Nuno

The Roco cleaning waggon smears all the oily dirt out evenly since the pad goes dirty very quickly... Not very effective in my opinion... You will also have to cut the pad to traverse turnouts and such... It is also *very* heavy to pull around the layout... I have one but don't use it anymore, have gone for the Herkat waggon mentioned earlier instead, with fluid cleaning...

Hi,

I use the Centerline car on C track. It does a great job with goo gone or Ronson lighter fluid. I got around cleaning the cleaner off of the track by having a second Centerline car folowing with a dry wiper.

It seems to me that the more I clean my center studs (with alcohol) the worse the contact is. It gets to the point where the engines won't even run anymore without a push start. It's almost as there needs to be some moisture to improve the contact between the wiper and the studs(The humidity is quite low in our area).
Has anyone had similar experiences and maybe a solution?

Hi all,

I too am experiancing the same symtoms after cleaning the centre rail. Not as much as Art who said he needs to push start his loco's, but I find that the loks need more trottle than usual to start up. I clean my rails with cloth and paraffin ( very old system I must purchase modern ways )[:I]. Does anyone know why this is happening?.
