Hello, first time poster, long time modeler here. I'm looking for a little help identifying this particular locomotive. It was part of a box full of HO Marklin tinplate destined for the dumpster. The newspaper wrapping it was dated for 1956 and showed little sign of being opened much since. I've seen a '50 and '52 catalog and it was in neither one of those. It runs like a watch and is a prized member (albeit an exclusively three rail member of my fleet)and currently does laps around my Christmas tree every year now for three years. Could any of you folks identify and date this locomotive? "HR800" and "MARKLIN" are cast on this side of the cab, "20 VOLT" and "MARKLIN" are cast on the other.

Well, welcome to the forum, and you better insure that Xmas decoration biggrin.

See this:

Your sample seems mint enough to be worth quite a bit.

And its catalog number is exactly that: HR800. I wish I had one...

Finds like that bring new meaning to dumpster diving! I cringe to think that it was destined to be thrown away.

You have definitely a rare treasure. Congrats.

I appreciate the quick replies, thank you very much. Thankfully I didn't have to dive for it, it was offered to me in passing on the way out by someone who knew my interest in model trains. Even I tossed it in my car to look over what was in the box at a later time. There were about 100+ pieces of M track, twelve freight vans and four passenger coaches. Two other small locos, an 0-4-0 steam switcher and a 4 wheel electric were badly overcome with zinc mites as well as about 1/3 of the wheelsets. This loco took a little alcohol to clean the wheel and she fired right up. It's interesting to see how many of the ones on feEbay have the same corrosion in the tender well.

Here are two of the four coaches, 3 346/1 coaches and 1 346/3 Schlafwagon, all in near mint condition. I kept these and one 374 Esso tanker.

Welcome to the forum Bob. Some nice treasures you saved. Many things get thrown because people don't realize the value, they just see it as junk.
