Hello friends,

I was originally looking for a steam loco, as I don't have one yet, but I cannot find anything new that REALLY catches my eye right now, although there are many possible candidates, most of them are on eBay and I prefer buying new if given the chance.

So I started looking at older electric locos instead, and narrowed it down to the Ce 6/8 II Crocodile (39595) and the "Prussian Crocodile" E71 insider (39771).

One dealer near me still has one or two E71 insider locos for sale new in storage, but they also have the Swiss Croc on discount, so they would cost just about the same right now (about 460 euros)

On one hand, it would be very cool to have a crocodile, as its very iconic, fully metal and it would indeed be my first croc. On the other hand, the E71 is unique, and I have an opportunity to buy one new, it would also be my first insider loco.

So, what are your opinions? I created a poll so you can vote if you want, for those of you who own one of these or both, how are you finding them?

I don't have any crocs, and I don't intend to get any (not that I have anything against the model of course). If I were to get one though, I would probably start with the classic, iconic, well known version of it.

I don't like crocs and only collect steamers so would not buy either one. I think crocs were for mountain railroads with switchbacks. They are not appropriate to flat layouts. I love my S 2/6's, S 3/6's and B VI's. Bought most of them used and have had few problems.

It is a very personal matter. If I had no croc, I would go to the croc.
The E71 is also a small croc, but in the sentence above, I refer to the brown one :-)
The E71 also looks great!

Do you have any collection thème ? That may help.

I've got a green Marklin Hamo SBB croc analog, a brown Marklin Setal, and a blue Roco fat little girl E 70 dc analog with the DB 40 year anniversary thunderbox set. Only the Setal is metal.unfortunately, it suffered a broken nose joint.

I agree, a hard choice indeed. But I would also go for the E71, it really is an exquisite model. If you can find the wagon set that goes with it as well, that does make a cute little train.

Thinking about it, there is probably sufficient time gone by now that Marklin may have another E71 in the new Items at some time this year, but it would probably work out more expensive if you can get the Insider one at a good price.

The Swiss crocodile is always in the catalogue or available in some version or another, so delay getting that in favour of the E71 would be my advice.

Hi
It depends on your intentions.

1. Are you planning to have a permanent layout in the future, and if so how large?
If it is a small layout, I would go for the E71. It is a brilliant model.

2. If you are a collector only, go for the larger Crocodile because that will always be the most recognisable model into the future.

I would definetly choose the E71 !!!

You can always get a swiss croc later. There are so many of them around...
I am sure that it will continue to be produced in the future too.

Disclaimer; I dont own any of the locos mentioned. -At least not from Märklin.

My initial thought! But then I started questioning myselfLaugh

I think I might just get the brown Croc:)

I am not planning on getting a permanent layout any time soon, part of the joy and benefit of C-track for me is the ability to try new track plans etc.

I must admit I am currently leaning towards the larger Croc, but the E71 is a real nice model.

This is what is keeping me from getting the brown Croc right away! And the alure of an insider-only model is there as well.

I don't, I just buy whatever I think is cool, with focus on the loco and rolling stock, not on the layout as I don't have a permanent one

Also I know this might piss some people off, but I don't put much focus on whether or not something is prototypical, if it looks good, it is good in my opinion:)

At this time I have 4 locos, of which 2 are diesels and 2 are electric. I am looking for a Class B VI or Märklin to release a Mallard when it comes to steamers, so in the meantime I thought one of these two would be cool:)

You can go to youtube and search for both marklin 39771 and marklin 39595 to get some impressions of them... and maybe think twice before getting any of them.

I made my decision today, given the comments about the future availability of the large Croc, I decided to go for the E71BigGrin

I will most likely purchase a Swiss Croc in the future, and as said by KiwiAlan and hxmiesa, it will most likely always be part of mama M's product catalogue

I also managed to knock a few more euros off the price on it, I think it will fit nicely once it arrives:)

The crocodiles were used on the Gotthard route and were to be found up and down the route, operating from Basel to Chiasso.
Later on, they were used on other routes as well, notably for the heavy gravel trains from the north to the south, notably the Weiacher Kiss train, but also on other routes. Over time, they were replaced by Ae 6/6 and Re 6/6s in most operations.

Until I can get my hands on the rolling stock that go with it, I think the insider car for 2023 would look alright, and I also have a lovely Underberg car that will fit perfectly:)

Hi if it any help the photos below show my Roco 40th anniversary of DB set .
I assume the coaches are correct for the loco and are all marked with a number and then "Karlsruhe" on the solebar.

What a beautiful layout you have there, very nicely done. The E71 does look incredible in that scenery, and fits together nicely with the dark-green rolling stock as well!ThumpUp

A little package arrived at my doorstep yesterday:) absolutely blown away by how smooth this thing runs. I didn’t think it was possible for anything to beat my T44, but this thing does. I don’t know if it’s the all metal construction, the twin cardan shafts or what, but it has certainly put the bar extremely high for my next loco to beat

Enjoy it! The cab lighting is rather whitish for an era 2 model.

Agreed! It is my only criticism. LEDs will seemingly never capture the comfortable warmth of light bulbs, but I think they could have done a better job than this. If anyone has a picture of the real thing’s cab lighting I would be interested. Does anybody have any idea on how this could be improved?

If all else failed, I think it would’ve been better to colour the interior itself more yellow-ish, so that the light reflected off of it wouldn’t be as harsh on your eyes.

It becomes especially apparent when it’s paired with light bulb lit coaches:
IMG_8347.jpeg

On the other hand, as my friend pointed out, it does to a certain extent contribute to the feeling that the inside of the locomotive is a workplace, while the inside of the coaches is a place for comfort.
