would it be considered a heresy converting this loco to digital?
I'm tempted to compete for it at a live auction but then I would have to convert it to digital as all my locos are, digital. Not wanting to change the motor but put the AC decoder only

I certainly don't think so, its worth less than a new crocodile at a marklin dealer! An older CCS800 I'd feel differently about.

Two notes if you are planning a conversion:

1- you need a few of the plastic hex nuts that hold the rod to the wheels on the inboard-most axles. These are metal on the old 3015s and can cause short which the decoder won't be happy about. If you search the forum you can find a thread about it with part number. They are cheap

2- I used the ESU motor magnet for my conversion. It runs REALLY well with it, and I trust this with the huge 3015 motor more than using the AC decoder. That is all gut though- my point is check to make sure the AC decoder can handle this much larger motor and its power needs, you may need to do the ESU magnet. I preferred the latter anyhow so I didn't research it.

Do you particularly want the big motored 3015 for it's 'heritage' look?

If not and since you haven't bought one yet, why not look for a 3056 or a 3356. That way you get one with a drum collector motor which can be converted easily with a 60760 kit. I have done this conversion. It ran really nicely.

If you particularly want a 3015 then obviously that's the way to go. At the end of the day if you bought it then it's yours and you can do what you like with it.
Marklin HO using M track. Now reverted to analogue as I find it has more character - and I understand it!

Swiss rear right lighting may be difficult unless you have the right electronic boards. Maybe have a dealer such as RFrowenfeld do it. Email him for pricing. He upgraded my brown 36159 (with 6080 decoder).

I never had the 3015, but I believe that it already was set up so that one taillight was on when running in the opposite direction as per Swiss light code.
I have heard of a few instances where the model was converted to digital.

Best regards,

I used 60906 decoder for 3015 conversion, keeping original motor.

I did not buy it. I had set myself a spending limit and as I was aiming at other stuff too I stopped bidding at one point. I got a set of old Swiss tinplate coaches though as having a few Swiss locos and nothing to place behind them I jumped at this opportunity. Two of the coaches, more in the specific column, have the possibility to open the carriage doors with 2 knobs on the roof, interesting 😊
Same coaches I see in BenP's video 👍🏻
