A freight train has apparently derailed in the Gotthard Base Tunnel. There is significant damage to the train and to the tunnel infrastructure.
Some traffic is being rerouted via the so-called "Panoramic" route (the old tunnel). Some traffic (eg Double Deck Trains) cannot travel on the classic route.
I was trying to figure out whether the second bore of the GBT can be used for traffic or whether it is closed in both directions.

Interesting that Double Deck Trains cannot handle the old classic scenic route with tunnels. Is it because these double deckers are too high and will hit the top of the entrance of the tunnels? I doubt the length would be a problem, unless they are too long and the edges would hit the side of the tunnels in the curves.

Or the old route catenary would touch the roofs on the cars.

I know that on the stretch between Spiez and Interlaken, the trackbed in a few tunnels had to be lowered (excavated) in order to accommodate the trains in 1996.
As these trains were not used on the north-south Gotthard, there was no need to do this. The Base Tunnel allowed these trains to use this route for the first time when it opened.

What a mess! At least the old route is plan B. The expressway pass is open until October too.

If I lived close by, I would get the camera out and visit the hbfs at Goschenen, Airolo etc. I have seen a lot of train videos on YouTube and that area is beautiful. Don't forget the church at Wassen too. You will not have another chance to see all those beautiful freight cars and passenger cars go by these area.

There are a number of photos (railpictures.net/etc) of traffic re-routed on the old route. I have also seen YouTube videos from Wassen/Goeschenen and other locations on the mountain route.

The Giruno in active service on the old route is a nice sight.

I wonder what the passenger preference will be, the speed of the base tunnel or the views from the original route.
I did the tunnel in 2019, but prefer the scenic route. Somebody who travels to Italy regularly might prefer the time saved via the tunnel.

I read that they have resumed operation of goods trains using the southbound bore this week. I do not know if this also applies to the RABe 502 double deck trainsets that had been running on some routes. I wonder whether clients have expressed a preference for the old route with the views over a quicker ride through the tunnel. I know that scenery is more interesting than the tunnel to me.
