Does Anyone Know a Close Match For TEE Colors in US Hobby Paints?

Hi everyone,
I"m about to embark on a long-delayed painting project, and have some coaches which I'd like to do in a TEE livery. Do any of you know of off-the-shelf hobby paints in the USA that are a close match on the beige and red? It doesn't need to be perfect, but I would like it close. I know in europe you can get marklin matches, but I'm not doing a restoration or trying to match other existing coaches so I'm happy just supporting my local hobby shop on the purchase :)
thanks in advance! |

thanks in advance! Why don't you orientate yourself at the original colours? The DB and DB AG always use RAL colours. As far as I know these RAL colours are sometimes used in the USA as well. In the German Internet you find plenty of websites about train colours. Here are only 3 of them https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAL-Eisenbahnfarbenhttps://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/DB-Farbtonkartehttps://www.mobadaten.info/wiki/DB_IV_Farbschemahttps://www.ral-farben.d...4tnit1ieel3qel3oarfej5n1

And showing how much painting I do (and how long it has been since I did any painting), here is a pdf that with a bit of cross-reference can help if you can not get Floquil/Polly Scale (discontinued in 2013... ), but also has Vallejo. https://www.testors.com/~/media/...st-Floquil-Portrait.ashxThanks Bigdaddy for the Humbrol link! Thanks! I did not know RAL was a match. That is great news. So I think I need these:
RAL1001 Beige (vallejo calls it dark sand) RAL 3004 Red (vallejo has this, but oddly on the website it does not concur the RAL number, but when I google the same part number it shows some bottles which do?)
Which translates to a fun project if this all works out!
The next question is logos. I'm debating a DB rubber stamp, FS rubber stamp, or no stamp. But that is all in phase 2 once painted anyways... |

In addition to my post #2, see this colour scheme: https://de.wikipedia.org...esbahn_1949%E2%80%931993First entry says window ribbion for TEE coaches from 1957 - 1974. This is probably the period of your TEE coaches and E 03. The loco always reflects the colour of the coaches. so they are identical. So RAL 1001 for the TEE coaches is also the colour for the casing of the E 03/103. If you scroll down you see RAL 3004 "Purpurrot" (purple red) for the lower side wall of the TEE coaches. Scroll down further the colour RAL 8019 "Graubraun" shall be the typical colour for frames and bogie. Further down RAL 7001 "Silbergrau" is named for roofs. If you got a E 03 002 this shall be the correct colour. At least my own E 03 002 has it. Interesting to know. Once I talked with a Märklin sales man about the colour scheme and asked him, if Märklin is using the colour scheme of the original railway DB. He agreed, but said, if I want to buy single coaches to get my own TEE train together, I have to be aware that are not all TEE coaches using the purple red band. Some red colour is a little bit lighter. So I shall compare the colour before I buy the cars.

Looking at Marklin items I already own, almost all tans are identical (or close enough), but I count 4 (!) different reds! I might have to order two close reds for a comparison The project is repainting a set of destroyed old 346 tinplate coaches into TEE livery, so in theory they only have to match each other but i"d like to get them at least halfway close to a locomotive I can run them with as well |

TEEwolf- while i have you, if I remember right you have done a bit of repainting older Marklin. do you have a good primer-paint recommendation for? I've heard various types and I wan't sure what will stick well/work the best on older Marklin, or if I just stick to the primer from vallejo or other final coating brand. |

Well, I did not paint very much yet. But get a look into this MUN marklin-users link: https://, www.marklin-users.net/fo...g-paint-off-plastic-bodyThe links to the "füssener-modelbaublaetter" in one of my posts are broken. I could not fix them, because it looks like the website is shut offline. But our friend here at MUN marklin-users, @RayF, shows in this thread very good paintings of a loco. Perhaps he may help you too. I would look at Faller, Auhagen, Noch, Busch all these supplieres of other goods beside modeltrains products probably offering colours. If they are good for your loco body I do not know. Depends of the material (plastic, metal) used as well. In a German thread I even read, some years ago a member mailed to Märklin asking for their using colours. Märklin should have sent him the colours. Why not a try as well? Here I found a German online-shop with an English website and a list of colors. https://www.besserepreise.com/en/colors.htmAlso Weinert has a massive offer of colours, even named with the RAL number. Did not know that Weinert is offering these colours. I only knew Weinert by its very detailed locomotive models and special tracks. But you also can get the colouts youo want. And there they are producing models themselves, I assume they should know which colour is used for which ground. https://www.weinert-baut...t-593,s=0,sort=,limit=50https://weinert-modellba...weinert-modellbau-farbenAs you see you may get these Weinert colours also at MSL. I could not find a English translation at Weinerts, at MSL you can deal with them in English. https://www.modellbahnsh...gb-p-0/gruppenliste.htmlI think at these shops you get good colours for painting and/or airbrush for your loco.

The Tamiya fine surface primer is a very good choice. I had so far no problems with it and I used it on plastic and metal as well. Just make sure that you prep the surface very well(remove all paint, fine sanding and washing it to remove oils and dust) before you prime. I bought it at various hobby shops including Hobby Lobby. Looking for ward to see some pictures of your project.
Happy Model Railroading

All, an update as I turn this into a "how to" thread. I'm travelling next week for work, but the week of the 29th I intend to strip, prep, and prime the coaches. They are already fully disassembled including body from frame etc, all in an effort to do this 100%
Then from there they can sit happily primed while I sample some final paint matches, and potentially get rubber stamping made for the DB logo... (I found a source, the question is what he will charge) |
