Hello - I have a bunch of old(ish) locos that are all analogue. I'd like to convert them to digital and want to know what "high efficiency digital propulsion" set to buy.

I know it depends on what type of motor they have. The issue is that I simply don't know.

I'd like to future-proof them and allow me the option of different decoders from different manufacturers perhaps (I only have an MS2 right now).

If it helps to give the loco numbers - here they are:

33701
3102
3417
3143
3148
3137
3461
34612
37398
33592
36792
36297 (delta)

Sorry if this has all been answered before. I keep finding that I read solutions but don't understand a critical bit of info (e.g. motor type) and I give up. Hence putting my head above the parapet now.

Many thanks

Hello AFAIK you only need digitalice these loks, the others are already digital or delta (delta is a digital simplify but you run them with your MS2)

The 3102 has a DCM motor so you can use a 60706 kit from marklin is cheap and easy to install, and 3461 too

3143,3137 have LFCM motor so you can use a lokpilot with magnet 51960

3148 has A SFCM motor so you can use a lokpilot with magnet 51961

I have a web site (in spanish) where I explain how to identify a marklin motor and some other things, you can use a translator to understand it

If you want the numbers for the 5 pole motor conversions kits then the locos with the LFCM motor will need the 60944 kit and those with SFCM motors will need the 60943 kit. The Lokpilot magnets quoted by Antonio will work but it retains the old 3 pole motor which is not so good.

The 60941 kit will fit locos with DCM motors. Antonio quoted the 60760 (not 60706) kit which is essentially a 60941 kit with a cheap decoder included. I have used the 60760 before to save some money, but I find that nowadays I prefer to use a MFX decoder instead of the one in the 60760 kit.

The instruction manuals for the 60944 and 60943 kits will list the locos that can be converted with these kits. As not all older locos are compatible with these kits you may want to check that the locos you want to convert are on one of these lists.

The manual for the 60944 kit is here:

The manual for the 60943 does not give the required information, but the earlier 60923 kit has the lists for both SFCM and LFCM motors:

OK great, thank you amartinexv and RayF. Much appreciated and very useful.

I'm still a little puzzled on next steps..

Ideally I'd like everything I have to have a 5-pole motor and fully digital (I understand the Delta is digital - but it is liimited so I'd like to change them). Is it simply that I have to open it up and somehow recognise what kind of motor it has? Or can I look up what kind of motor it has? I'd much prefer to be able to look it up!

Once I work out the motor type then I need to understand what my best option is (upgrade motor, which kit, decoder etc.). Price isn't the focus (I will either totally update a loco or not at all).

What I'm trying to say is: If I need to work out what the most advanced option is for a loco how do I do it? For example if I take the 33701 and want to make it as advanced as possible how do I work it out? Or the 3461 - is the 60760 my only choice or should I go with the 60941 and buy a separate decoder?

Thank you. I'm hoping my questions aren't too naive.
