Hi all

I recently installed a Seuthe no 11 smoke unit in my BR50 (digital). However, it sometimes smokes, sometimes doesn't, and then it makes a puffing noise and bellows smoke and stops again - very erratic behaviour.

Has anybody experienced this or can anyone help please.

Regards

Mark

Too much smoke fluid poured into it?

Mark,

I agree with the Webmaster. I have had the same problems over the years, and it always has been because of too much fluid. Does the Suethe 11 have the removable center core? I can't remenber. If it does, remove it and clean it out with the tiny wire provided. This will get the excess fluid out.

Hi guys

Firstly the Seuthe no 11 does not have a removable element, but I originally also thought I had too much fluid so I cleaned it out with alchohol. I still have the same problem.

Hi Mark,

Cleaning with alcohol is an idea I had not heard before. Is this recommended? On the smoke generators, that don't have a center core, I let them sit overnight upside down to get all of the fluid out.

Try hooking up the smoke generator outside of the loco with wires to see if it works. Sometimes the connections in the loco particularly the ground, if there is paint in the stack do not make a good connection. Other than that I'm stumped. Could be a bad unit.

Hi Mark,all,
Have you tested the unit with hooking it up to a transformer? That will asap if you got dead one. It's happened to me a couple of times,.....
Just a few other things to check:Clean the unit,I would use something stronger that just alcohol, maybe paint thinner or even acetone for a few minutes, check the tube and clean it with the super then wire that comes with the unit, try to replace the tube.
Make sure that the smoke stack in the loc is clean, sometimes when they are spary painting the bodies at the factory, paint gets inside it and acts as an insulator between the lok(ground) and the smoke unit(the unit itself is also ground)
Check to make sure the copper(brass?) tab is clean and is making good contact with the small 'tail' at the bottom of the unit(this is positive) and alos that the wire from the tab is getting juice!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
Good luck!

Does the generator work steadily when your loco is the only power consumer on the track?
I sometimes find a similar problem, due to too may power consumers on the track.I have only a 30 VA trafo as power and when I run lighted cars and several locos, the smoke unit will stop working, but downhill travel will make it smoke again (reduced power consumption) or when I turn off lighting in cars and so on. Often it will then restart smoking with a sputter. But the smoke unit will work steadily if there are only few power consumers on the track e.g. no ligthed cars or only standing locos.
I need a stronger trafo (=&gt; German short form for Transformator).
BTW I use five drops of smoke fluid, fills about half of the Seuthe 10 (from my analog days), but otherwise works fine.

Hi Everybody

Thanks for all the advise - I'm certainly going to try some and let you know what happens.

As far as power is conncerned I have enough because I have 5 loco's, 3 lighted coaches and I run a booster on my system.

I have a funny feeling that it is a dud smoke unit.
