Hi all,

I have just returned from a most magnificent railway holiday in Germany and Switzerland.

For two weeks, we travelled on Rail Passes to see sights and sounds of railways in Europe.
The Train System in Europe is very advanced of course, and everything runs on time for Departure and Arrival.
Internet Systems and Apps also assist to make scheduling trains very easy.

The mountains and scenery were absolutely wonderful all of the way.
We saw Museums and Historical sights, of course all train related.
And we bought some extra goodies at the Marklin Museum too.

Some of the highlights include :

1) Transport Museum in Nuremberg
2) Marklin Museum in Goppingen (of course)
3) Jungfrau near Interlaken
4) Seeing the Matterhorn from Zermatt
5) Glacier Express to St Moritz
6) Gotthard experience in Wassen

And some pictures from Switzerland too :

We really enjoyed staying on the Gotthard line in a small village called Wassen.
Walked about and enjoyed the history of the Crocodiles pulling freight loads over the mountain passes.

DSCF4493.JPGDSCF4490.JPGHi all,

Those of you who have followed my layout at home will enjoy the pictures of the Matterhorn !

The Matterhorn Mountain has featured in my last 3 layouts, so of course we had to see the real mountain.
Was covered in mist on first day, but the mist cleared just in time for me to get a good viewing of the mountain.
Very, very impressive sight !

Great pictures, must have been a wonderful trip!

Zermatt is a superb place,if you can afford to stay there!

I just started to realise that the Matterhorn in scale H0 would have a height of 51.47 mtrs (4,478 mtrs devided by 87)!

Taking Zermatt as groundlevel 1,620 mtrs above sealevel, 2,858 mtrs would remain, devided by 87 equals 32.85 mtrs in the hobbyroom.

Perhaps a bit too much to keep the spouse happy......

A long time ago I visited the Swiss traffic museum at Luzern called Verkehrshaus, they have a 1/87 scale modelrailway of the Gotthard line there, very impressive but surely not in proportion with the real thing.

Cheers,
Paul

Paul,

Thanks for comments !
Yes, Zermatt was our most expensive chalet for the comfort of the room. You either have to double your budget, or else reduce your comfort.

The Matterhorn in HO .. wow, 32 meters ! I still enjoy my tiny weeny out-of-scale small one, and guess what .. the circumference of my mountain is just a bit larger than the circumference of my waist, so it is a convenient access hole for me to pop up through the hatch and attend to railway business. I simply drop the Matterhorn down and then I can pop up !

The Luzern Verkehrshaus railway layout tries to model the same shape of the bridges and tunnels at Wassen. There are the same loops around the mountain bends, and the Church at Wassen is visible three times on the model layout exactly as it is also three times in real life !

John,

Have you actually been to the Verkehrshaus in Luzern?
Was the picture of the Croc taken there?
I know I once saw a Croc there, forgot the cabinnumber.
The brown minicroc we also saw from the train, think it was parked outside a small local railwaymuseum.
We did a grand tour by train in Switzerland last year, arriving in Basle from Utrecht by ICE.
Thence Basle to Lausanne/Lauterbrunnen/Luzern,boat to Fluelen,Goschenen/Airolo/Lugano/Tirano/Preda/Brig,back to Basle.
Very enjoyable indeed!
The train being the most convenient method of transport in such a mountainous country,we found the express trains very crowdy in general, seat reservations in advance are a must,in particular for the sightseeing trains like the Glacier Express.
We had dinner on the Glacier Express and that was first class!
Preda was rather funny because the only thing there is a small station in front of a railwaytunnel, and a familyhotel uphill.
When in Tirano, take your time to enjoy a perfect pizza near the railwaystation.
Think we should go there again.

Beautiful and very peaceful Preda:

If it was on your way to Preda, then it must have been Bergün, and this museum (well worth a visit): http://www.bahnmuseum-albula.ch/

I love the pictures! ThumpUp

The mountain on the layout is my favourite and I think it is in "visual" scale even if not in "real" scale. It gives the impression of being much larger than the trains while you can still enjoy the scenery.

Well done. BigGrin

As a reward, I will give you a picture of a little building I saw in Rome a few days ago and which I plan to place on my layout in a position similar to the mountain's.

Hi John,

magnificent trip and you are indeed a very lucky man. Because such a picture, getting the Matterhorn without clouds is very rare.

But if your son lives in Zug, have you heard about the "Verkehrshaus" ("traffic house") in Luzern, which is just round the corner of Zug? (for everybody: "Zug" is a city in Switzerland and the English translation is "train"Confused BigGrin and Zug is very famous for its very low tax rates, even for Switzerland. Huh Laugh Love )

Please, have a look here:

Verkehrshaus

and plan your next trip to Switzerland including a trip through the longest railway tunnel of the world - through the Gotthard in high speed. Regular scheduled train traffic starts in December 2016.

If you want to see the Matterhorn in H0 scale too, I could recommend you the "Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg". Have an impression here

Miniatur Wunderland HH Schweiz.

regards

Wolfgang
