I have not done any actual video editing before so I decided I should try it out. I used Windows Movie Maker and here is the result.
I did not do anything with the sound, just cut and trimmed clips and joined them together and added some title screens...

Hello Dale,

Great video! I did like the views taken alongside/behind from a vehicle on another track.

Is that some early Sommerfeldt I see sprouting ?

PJ

On Sunday we've managed to go for a walk in the city's Esplanade and took a few photos, I think this one stand out from the others.

Easy! They are a pain. Minatur Wunderland don't use the pantographs on the electric trains - they show the catenary, but it is not used - too expensive to maintain.

When Miss 16 was younger I wish I had thought to use just the poles and leave off the wires when we had our third layout. Catenary and small children do not mix well.. But Dale's idea has great merit. Smile

PJ, I'm not taken Dale's place how to connect the wires, what I've done and Sommerfeldt supplies you with gadgets whereas you lay these multifunction guide plates (2) onto the track they have holes on either side (it depends which direction the track runs (left or right) I than taken a wire the same length as Sommerfeldt supplies you with bent the 2 ends to a 90° angle and place them on either end into the holes. your length of wire should never go over or outside the track and where ever this spot is you place a mast. so the curve in the track determines where the mast will go, sharper curves (shorter wires) the masts will be closer together and on straight tracks they will be much further apart longer wires).
with the guide plates below you can see the 2 holes and the holes on your right determines which mast you are using from a tramway mast up to a cross span mast (further away from the track.

slightly off topic:
my catenary is 30 years old, very little maintenance, the only maintenance I've done is correcting the distance of masts as we have gone into an era whereas pantographs are more prototypical (SBB) = narrow wiper and this was a pain on some sections and I've used solder acid instead of today's led free solder paste.
I also do not buy ready made wires from Sommerfeldt anymore as I do my own wiring and just buy the wires (500mm in length) and connect the bottom wires first , than the the top wires and than the vertical supports.

well, I tried doing the profi level Sommerfeld once, and it certainly looked pretty good when first done.
Here is what it looked like: http://layout.mixmox.com/1/Sommerfeld-catenary

But it did not last long, the problems with it are:

a) the slightest bump, by a hand, cat, pointing finger of a visitor, bends the running wire, and once bent there is no way to get it perfect again.
b) Even the very small profi wires are still way to visible and thick. (I even did the painting them a dark colour.) I have looked at many photographs and videos of real trains and one can hardly see the running wires.
c) The obstruction of access to large station areas makes any sort of work on the area very very difficult.
d) The additional poles and tension systems needed for areas with turnouts, double slips etc. is proportionally higher in the model than the prototype. So much so, that I suspect that if the real railroads had to work at those rations they would have found a cheaper system. If one were to do all the stuff to make it possible to electrify the turnouts you end up with a rat's nest of wires that become very distracting and look very unprototypical.
e) additional expense.

So, I have decided to put up the poles using prototypical distances and arrangements etc., I will be installing the tensioners and transformers I have, but I won't be adding the 'Queertragewerk' wires nor the running wires and their supports.

I have installed the poles along the visible areas already and they really do give the feeling and Gestalt of an electrified railway.

I may eventually set the pantographs of the locos open to be just below the nominal catenary height and hold them in place with a thread so that they are not running about with their pants down.

I'll take some pictures and create a page showing what the mainline and station areas look like.

I'll have to go down and photograph the prototype in the Thames Valley to show you ... Laugh Laugh Laugh

They are only running about 3 years behind electrifying the Great Western ... LOL LOL LOL LOL

Thanks for the info John, but that is indeed how I built my catenary; the dual jigs are very handy.

See my post 24th January 2016
