After 3-4 years of waiting, I finally have in my possession a permanent magnet 51965 from ESU for converting Märklin 1 gauge universal motors to DC. I had to order it from Germany. It's STILL not available in the U.S. I"m happy to say that the magnet so far has worked perfectly.

Regards,
Tom

Good news, thanks for letting us know Tom. I know of a few people that will be pleased with that, including myself.

I believe the magnet also works with the Marklin 3015 Crocodile .

I picked mine up from a store in Stockholm yesterday.

It is not only for 1 scale, but also for converting the old crocodile 3015 on H0 scale and that is what I will use it for.

As reported for big scales ESU magnet 51965 is available, but it could pointed out that it is also meant for the old crocodile 3015 in H0 scale and that is the use I will have for mine, that I picked up yesterday.

There was one thread in the H0 section and one in the Big Scale section as the new magnet can be used for both. The merged thread should be in General MRR. Or maybe keep both threads?

Tom

Yes I know that. But it seemed rather pointless to have two threads discussing the same topic. The rule of thumb is that the first thread prevails, and in this case it applies more to G1 than it does to H0 - there is only one H0 loco that this magnet can be used with to my knowledge, the CCS800 / 3015 Crocodile.

That would also make it applicable to the ST800/DL800 series as they used the same motor IIRC.

I can inform you that ESU presents the magnet as follows: "51965 Permanentmagnet, für Märklin® 3015, ET800, ST800, Spur 1 Allstrommotoren" in other words 51965 Permanent magnet, for Märklin® 3015, ET800, ST800, scale 1 all current motors.

Given that this magnet is relevant for H0 I feel that the entire thread should be moved to "General MRR" or the posting in the H0 section re-instated since that posting was pointing at the first thread and was put in the H0 section, since there might be others who are into H0 and therefore not read threads realated to other scales.

Below ESU's picture of the magnet.

That took a while!

Last year I got tired of waiting and bought a replacement motor from
http://morep.ch/umbauten_antriebe/132.php

Cost me a fortune, but worked great. Need to optimize the cv's a bit more for near zero speed, but all in all very happy.

Hi,

I made the first test converting a classic Märklin-Motor 1072 (aka 1322G).

UserPostedImage

Useful if you want to have a DC-motor in the old housing.

I received from Germany an ESU 51965 permanent magnet for 1 scale Märklin universal motors. To my delight, it worked perfectly. This should give new life to the old 5749, 5797, etc Märklin 1 scale loks from the 70's and 80'sl

Tom

Getting this magnet did indeed "take a while" as Gregor said! I contemplated, as did he, ordering a custom motor for my Märklin 1 scale 5749, a DB 38. But the cost of the motor with shipping approached the value of the lok! Plus I would have had to grind away some of the chassis to make it fit. That motor was from SB Modellbau, I believe. A beautiful highly machined piece of work but it just didn't make sense to me. So I bought a Faulhaber 2224 coreless motor from Motorman for $64 and remotored the lok. Interestingly, the Faulhaber provided more stall torque at less current draw than the original open frame motor. But it's not "original Märklin," and the purist in me had wished for that. On another lok, a 5700 DB 89, I remotored with a $19.95 Maxon coreless motor. All this while I was waiting for the 51965 magnet to appear. Now I have a choice! Thank you, ESU, and please tell us when it will be available in the USA!

But I do have the obligatory (six) SBB Krocs
ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control.
With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397.
