Was the Bavarian D XII strictly a freight locomotive or did it also pull passenger cars? I like the Marklin 43984 Bavarian passenger car set but am not sure if it is appropriate for the class D XII.

I know it's a hobby and I can do as I please but I was just curious.....

I think on the contrary, it was a passenger train or at least classified as a passenger train (top speed 90km/h) and had diverse routes out of Munich, apparently 96 of them had been produced with slight variants. I would assume as so many of these smaller locos would have some freight carriages attached to a passenger train. the Märklin picture may confuses the issue displaying it as a freight train, I can't find any correspondence relating this loco to a classified freight train on the other hand one would expect Märklin to know whether it was a freight or passenger train unless it played a favorable roll to display it as a freight loco with freight carriages, common sense though would suggest how did they deliver freight into the mountain region around Munich, there are a couple books available about this loco but of course no pictures.

this is the presentation book that comes with the 43981 Pfalzbahn set
The 43981 set has two passenger cars and two freight cars.

This loco has fairly large driving wheels and only two coupled axles, so it is more appropriate for passenger traffic than freight.

Many locos were, in practice, used outside their intended role, especially on branch lines and towards the end of their working life.

Thanks Svein, lovely looking set. ThumpUp

Does anyone know if these coaches are available seperately? I don't recall seeing them in a Marklin catalogue, but maybe Trix?

Hi Ray,

Perhaps Trix 23716 and 23717 are the brown versions of these coaches as separately sold items. I am not sure of that, though, they might be green...
