What cars can I run with my RE4/4. ( M 39429)?
I have a one 4066 coach. I also have two of the FS coaches from the tin plate display set. Would they run together? Would the RE 4/4 pull sleepers, CIWL, DSG, or TEN? Can I mix sleepers with day coaches of various countries? What about DSG restaurant cars?
I know from Mike's post about what countries' coaches run behind the Ae 6/6 almost anything goes for it. I am curious about the Re 4/4.
Thanks, in advance, for the answers.

Hello:

39429? Do you mean 39420 (green) or 39421 (red)? Those are Re 4/4I Pendelzug loks. These loks were used for local and regional push-pull trains on many Swiss lines. The consist would normally be composed of a baggage car (43401), two second class coaches (43371) and a pilot coach (43410) or RailTop 21301/21302 or 21303.

The Re 4/4I (Pendelzug) were not used for international traffic. The Re 4/4I (2nd Series) (37044) was used to pull SBB Express Trains and International Trains in the flat areas of the country, eg between St. Gallen, Zuerich and Geneva, between Basel and Luzern, and so on.

The more modern Re 4/4II (3434, 34344, 37356, 37343, etc) were used to pull freight and passenger trains, both in the flatlands and on both the Gotthard and Loetschberg/Simplon routes.

There are books like Die Gotthardbahn by Marti & Trueb (OF publishing) and Lokomotiven und Triebwagen (SBB Historic.ch) that list the loks and give photos and some details about what coaches (esp pilot coaches) go with each lok.

Another good source of photos of all kinds of Swiss loks is: http://www.bahnbilder.de...hierarchie1/Schweiz.html

Select E-Loks or Dieselloks or one of the other categories to see the photos.

Another useful site is http://www.polier.ch/page/archiv/Fotoarchiv.htm. Click on P. Sutter and then select SBB or BLS and enjoy!

Thank you Mike,
I knew you would have the answer at your fingertips.
My Re 4/4 is the green Re 4/4 1, with the rounded front. I guess I will have to put some Swiss lightweight passenger cars n the wish list. I have to find some of the 24 cm ones, as I like they way they look on the layout. Alas I shall have to take the FS cars out of the consist.

I am not clear which model you have. The 37044 Re 4/4I (2010) could be used with Swiss domestic and international coaches as these loks could be found between Geneva/Lausanne and Brig (for example) or between Basel and Luzern. The Re 4/4I (39421) with the gangway doors on the end was used for regional push pull trains, but may have occasionally seen use with international trains if other loks were not available or were defective and needed to be replaced.

I must apologize. I have not been clear. Mine is 39429. It has the gangway doors at the ends. It has a whistle, but no other sounds. One side has louver vents, the other windows, I presume the walkway past the motors.
Pending the budget being able to get some of the lightweight Swiss cars, I wil have to go with the "it's my rail road, I will run what I want" philosophy.
I always appreciate you incredible knowledge of Swiss trains.
Thank you
