Greetings,

I recently acquired the beautiful 37320 set and am wondering if Maerklin has released any freight sets that would be suitable for prototypical consists. If anyone has any other suggestions for freight cars from any other manufacturers, I'd be interested to hear about them too.

Thanks!

Ed.

The 37320 Set represents a Re 10/10 Set as they appeared during the 1990s and perhaps as recently as 2000. The loks in the set can be either used together or individually. The Re 6/6 could be used solo to pull either a freight train or a passenger train. Green Re 6/6 could be found hauling Intercity and Eurocity trains made up of SBB, FS or DB rolling stock on the Gotthard route. DB coaches would be either blue/beige and red/beige IC coaches, or either DB IC liveries from the 1990s:

Traffic red: http://www.railfaneurope...18019901304_e0021681.jpg

The Re 4/4II could be found pulling either local or regional trains, both on the Gotthard and on other routes in Switzerland. In combination with Re 6/6, these loks were used for direct heavy freight trains from Basel through to Chiasso on the Italian border. The freight trains could consist of either mixed goods wagons that were marshalled at Muttenz for the trip to Chiasso and in Chiasson for the trip into Italy. Progressively, Re 10/10 combinations were used to pull consist trains belonging to private operators.

The length of the consist behind a Re 10/10 largely depends on how much space you might have on your layout or in your collection. My era V freight consists include one consist made up of Wascosa "Euro" Tankers. I also have a consist made up of Maerklin and other Hupac container cars. I also have a consist made up of Maerklin, Roco and Hag PTT container cars. I am in the process of replacing those with the newly released Liliput PTT cars.

As far as other options, you could use a Re 10/10 with assorted freight cars (mixed goods) or with a unit train made of of identical cars. You can find a good variety of possibilities by looking at www.railfaneurope.net (click on CH, then on SBB, then on electric and then on Re 6/6).

Unit trains could be container cars, grain or gravel hoppers, car carriers or box cars.

Some models you can consider:

46321/46322 Grain cars Transcereales
46331 Weiacher Kies Hopper Cars
47456 Hupac car Set
47449 Container Set
Liliput or LSM (coming) Hupac Coach and 47404 flat cars
Liliput PTT container cars
There are also nice Hupac cars from Kombimodell

If you go to a dealer like Eurorailhobbies, Eurolokshop or others which carry many brands, you can input container, tank car or similar in the search field and the results will show you all the possible models. For trains in Switzerland, the fact that many trains run through Switzerland containing cars from all over Europe makes for very interesting consists.

Here are some of my favorite Re 6/6, Re 4/4II and Re 10/10 consists that can be modelled with the 37320:

Re 6/6:
EC Tiziano (Erstfeld):

Gotthard IC/EC:

also: http://www.bahnbilder.de...Re+6~6+%28Re+620%29.html (Bigrigio livery)
and:
even with classic DB red/beige and blue/beige IC coaches:

Freight:

Tank cars: http://www.bahnbilder.de...Re+6~6+%28Re+620%29.html
Lumber cars: http://www.bahnbilder.de...Re+6~6+%28Re+620%29.html

Re 10/10:
Mixed Container Train: http://www.bahnbilder.de...Re+6~6+%28Re+620%29.html Grain Hopper Cars UserPostedImage

Re 4/4II:
SBB EWIV or EC coaches/DB Coaches (no Pilot coach)
Lima/Liliput NPZ blue/white coaches with yellow doors
Roco or Hag green EWI and EWII coaches
Short mixed Freight train. These trains would go between the larger distribution centers and smaller locales and have a pretty varied makeup of SBB and international cars.

I hope that these examples allow you to use your creativity to compose a nice consist or two for your loks

Regards
