Can the 18va digital starter set transformers be used for anything once you have installed larger (e.g., 60055) transformers on your layout? Are they suitable for turnouts or is there a problem with their voltage?

Dan, you could use them for accessories, but be aware that the early 18va transformer output DC instead of AC. I'm not sure about the later grey ones, I'll have to measure mine to find out. Plus, with only 18va on tap, they won't power too many items.

Bigdaddynz,

Thank you. I have a recent one (black, 120v for USA use) - and I'll be getting another one with a starter set that has the IR controller. It seems a shame that they have to be consigned as paperweights - or landfill denizens - after their yeoman job of getting a first layout going.

Excellent for lighting. If you install strips of LED lighting, you might be able to ligth a LOT, although they only have 18VA.
IF you want to use incadessant bulps, you might install 12V bulps (2 in serie) so that the light dont get yoo bright...
Best regards

Thank you.

So, to use it to power turnouts, I assume I would simply cut off the plug that is intended for the Feeder box ("ugly box"/60115) and connect the wires to the yellow and blue (via control box) turnout wires.

Do you know the convention for the two transformer wires going to the plug --- one has grey stripes on it - is it the ground? and would it be the wire for the turnout control box?

Cool

I have measured several of the grey 66191 transformers, and the all deliver 23,5 - 24 volts.

It's an 18 volt trafo rectified and with capacitors, even though they are labeled 18 V DC.

Please measure and confirm. wink

Per.

PS: I have sold several, always including a warning Smile

John,

Pierre was clearly referring to the output line from the starter set transformer (not the input line going to the transformer from a house's wall outlet) - my question was directed at the wires going to the track feeder box and the plug that goes into the track feeder box.

Well, if all I can get from trying to answer a reasonable question is being accused of putting somebody's life in danger, I guess I will simply say goodbye to the forum [:(!]

Here we have an example again of taking views personally.
Accusing someone is, someone has blaimed someone for an act that has been commited.
My subject was referring to the possible danger of a person not understanding the physics of electricity.
All I tried to point out the danger with 220-240 voltage.
I take your point of talking about and enquiring about secondary power.
My post was a precautionary matter for anybody not being able to understand or follow someones instructions,
I appologize if I have used your name in this matter but there was no intention of accusing you.

I thought prevention is better than ignorance.
I have deleted my post.

So has anyone found a useful job for the 66181 / 66191 18VA transformers from the starter sets?

Regards,

Thomas

I guess the best use is street lights, building lights, windmills, waterwheels, etc.

Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.
