Does anyome here have the heljan container crane installed on a lay-out with C track? the video of the crane is shown with two rail operation and it seems that only the rail is visible, as it is with the prototype.

I am curious to know how it was solved the third rail connection to run AC. Is this a home build system?

not sure I understand the question... what does the type of train rail have to do with the container crane ? It surely runs on its own two rails...

Dale, the crane comes with a base in plastic that you have to modify to run your rail line. Since in this kind of settng usually rail lines are embedded in concrete, I was wondering if someone had this installation with three-rail C track and how they managed to make it look prototypical

Very nice indeed! I think it comes equiped for various Marklin trackage, etc. I know it is quite costly.

Thanks Peter. I believe that it recommends to use K track and a transition piece to C track. I think I can do that. However, I will try to cover the wood ties, since I believe that, usually in this case of scenario, the rail is actually embedded in concrete so that trucks (lorries) can travel around freely.

So I will plan to:
- transition from C track to K track
- install the K track in the container terminal
- cover it with gray plastic and either leave the pukos out or run a wire in the middle on top of that. We will see.

The terminal is on-sale at Walthers for $ 500.00. Still a bit too much considering these times but I will think about it..

Well actually no. If you look at these pictures of the real deal, you can clearly see the wooden sleepers and no croncrete between the tracks.

A friend of mine drives a container truck. Last summer I went along for a day's driving and we picked up a container at the inland containerterminal in Lille Dourges, France. They have several gantry cranes there and some of the rails running under them are concreted in, while other just lie in ballast with wooden ties.
Alongside the track, there is usually a reserved concrete lane to stack containers (only 1 unit high) and next to that, a concrete road for the trucks (see second picture).
When a trucker needs a container from the train or the adjecent stack, he parks the truck alongside that container and waits for the crane operator to come and load it onto his trailer.

On the other side of the site, another gantry crane loads & unloads containers from ships in the canal.

Inbetween there is a large storage area where containers are stacked in bigger and higher stacks, but this is not under the big gantry cranes. Here smaller mobile cranes are used to move the containers.

At the entrance of the compound is a parking area for trucks and trailers.

Given the relative small scale of the Lille Dourges terminal, it is a good example to model a HO terminal after.

I am looking for info re C or K track and the link does not work.
