Hi,
I am designing a layout with a piece of the new wide angle slip switch 24720 as show in the attached image.

24720 excerpt.jpg

Maerklin's description of 24720 states that short 24071 pieces are needed at each end.
Does anyone know why the 24071 pieces are needed at the ends of 24720?
Can other "straight" sections be used instead of 24071?

Thanks for your help.
Best regards, Reno

So longer cars have enough side clearance when passing one another. otherwise, the space between the two will be too narrow for entering/exiting the turnouts.

The edges of the 24071 can be detached to make it fit in the narrow space available. All other straight tracks are too wide to fit in.

Even your drawing shows how the edges of the rails overlap so as to make the configuration physically infeasible.

Hi,

The 24071has removable side road beds. These are removed to connect to the 24720, which comes with a filler V piece to replace the road beds on the 24071. No other straight piece has the removable road beds and won’t be able to make the connection to the 24720

It’s possible to use other track pieces but then you need to cut away a wedge from the track bed from at least one of the tracks.
