I just picked up this Marklin locomotive, a few cars and plenty of track at a local estate sale (no transformer). Does anyone know if something like this could be repaired to run again? Or is it only good for parts? Here are a few pictures:

You can try to see if Scott at Helmut's Hobbies in Virginia can help you with a repair (USA). I am not sure how much parts he has for classic models.
If you are willing to send the model to Europe for repair or restoration, you can check with Ritter Restaurationen in Germany, which would be my recommendation.

Best of luck

Oh wow!Wheels were a corrosion issue on old models. Surely someone somewhere has good replacements, along with motor brushes, etc. It looks about 1930-35 vintage Solid tird rail M track ws the first. It's in very good shape. I wonder if the turnout solenoids operate? The E-10 and cars are zinc pest free too. Even not running, it's a very nice show piece of Marklin history.

Thank you both for the replies. If I wanted to test the turnouts, would I be able to use a more modern transformer? I have a Marklin No 37547 transformer that I could use if it would work.

Hi
It looks to be in pretty good condition. You need at least one new wheel which is the one with the drive gear. Also you need 2 of the coupling wire straighteners. Not sure what they are called. If the gears are messing then the frame could still be good. If not then it may not be worth fixing. These small engines are really prone to zinc pest. Can you take off the body and we can see more as there are more die cast pieces internally. Ritter or more expensive TTN. I just had a look at TTN and the springs are called Jerk Springs I'm sure that is not the correct translation at 3 Euros each and a wheel set 75 Euros.

You can use a newer 16 volt transformer, not a switched mode powerpack.

So, I have some bad news. Despite being what I thought was extremely careful, the side trim on the bottom cracked and fell apart. There was another piece on the bottom section that the body attaches to which was already broken (visible in last image). Here are some more pictures of the inside. What do you guys think?

Oh sad! It's zinc pest. The motor block is shot.

Lovely. Put it back together (superglue broken base) and have a nice pre-war display piece. It is well preserved but won't ride again without replacing innards. Note that power pick up is for continuous middle rail, not puko track. Track are probably fine for connect to transformer.
Digital M (+ some K) track layout with mostly vintage rolling stock and accessories, and small Z scale layout.

I agree with Ben P. Put it back together and use it as a display. The cars can be gently cleaned up and run but it would not be worth trying to make the engine whole again - it would be a bit of a Frankenstein with a mix of more modern and old parts and you would need to buy another one for the frame. 30's era engine frames are not that easy to obtain and as a collectible, its value is toast anyway so why bother? Get a newer used engine that still runs and enjoy operating the vintage cars and track.

Don't feel bad- that was probably going to crack sooner or later no matter what...

Hi
I feel a bit bad asking you to remove the cab from the body. However I agree that frame is generally the part that is broken and from the photo you can see that gears do not mesh so the motor frame and bushing support part is also heavily cracked. It would cost several hundred dollars for the spare parts as virtually all the casting apart from the cab that need replacement. A professional restorer in Germany could charge you 500 Euros plus to get working. You could sell as spare parts and buy something that works or has been restored. The problem buying a replacement that works is that it will more than likely be zinc pest affected.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback and useful information. It's very much appreciated. I've never come across a model train this old before so I was excited and hopeful that I could get it to work again. I also wasn't aware of the zinc pest issue that affected models this old. I will likely keep it as a display piece as many have recommended.

I came across this video on youtube which looks like a working one:

Märklin RS800 von 1937

Maybe try hunting for a frame, or another one for sapre parts that has a good frame?
