Help with Marklin Track Cleaning cars - 46042 46049

Joined: 20/08/2013(UTC) Posts: 36 Location: usa		I have two Marklin Track Cleaning Cars Numbers 46042 (red) and 46049 (green) on my M track layout. Both frequently derail on Marklin straight track, curves and switches. I've tried changing them in the consist running them at slower speed, changed engines, changing and cleaning felt pads etc. no luck. Wheels look clean. I'm not sure if I add weight to the cars remembering the felt pads and the strain on the engines. Anyone experience this issue? Any suggestions? Thank You Jim Wallace wallace21037@gmail.com

To be honest they derail always on crossings and sometimes on turnouts. While I find the design of everything Märklin that I own is quite exceptional, these cleaning wagons are the exception to that rule. Kimball

Joined: 04/02/2011(UTC) Posts: 3,166 Location: Paris, France		Hi Jim I am sorry to report that these Märklin cleaning wagons are almost useless on C Track because the cleaning power is not huge (rails have to be clean before using these cars). Also you need a quite powerfull loco to pull them and they give me some issues on level crossings. So, instead I do a very bad thing: I use 2000 grade "water abrasive" (used to polish cars after a new paints before a final polish) Here is a view of my layout Cheers Jean

Although Märklin say not to use sandpaper, 2000 grit is finer than track rubbers and finer than those track cleaning cars. 2000 grit is available at most hobby shops and some hardware stores. Kimball

Thank You Jim Wallace Have you tried to test by add extra weight inside of the clean car? I have 46049 and have no derailment with this wagon. You can use small heavy metal pieces and put it inside of the cleaning car.

Joined: 23/10/2010(UTC) Posts: 1,938 Location: FRANCE		On my layout (with C-Tracks), I noticed that the felt pads caught on the other track pukos when passing over the crossings, I use flat pliers to reduce the width of the felt pads a little by compressing them a little and it works most of the time.
