Updated 31.01.2014

The article number 2854 is added in the photo by me.  it is printed on the box ends only.

This set was produced from 1981 to 1985 for the general market.
Train length = 99,5 cm.

Locomotive,

 DB 86 578

This model is version 10 of  Märklin 3096. The Telex couplers are installed by me. L = 15,8 cm
2854 may contain version 8, 9 or 10 of this locomotive, all without Telex couplers.  The differences are as far as I know  these:

Version 8:
The radius bar (above the crosshead) is made of wire, crosshead type 5 (a simpler one).

Version 9:
The radius bar  is made of wire, crosshead type 6A.

Version 10:
The radius bar is made of plate, crosshead type 6A(as in the below photo).

The radius bar and the crosshead from 3096 version 10 (from my 2854 train set).

The baggage car:
DBNo. 124 013

This icar is version 5 of Märklin 4699. L = 9,3 cm
the close couplers (7205) and two axels with spoke wheels are installed by me.

The pipe cars:
the set contains of 6 identical DB H10 flat cars with pipe cradles, to run in three pairs with the three identical Mannesmann pipes

DB H10 990 303 H, pair 1:

Theses are version 3 of Märklin 4697. L = 2x 11,5 cm
the close couplers (7205) and two axels with spoke wheels are installed by me.

DB H10 990 303 H, pair 2:

Theses are version 3 of Märklin 4697. L = 2x 11,5 cm
the close couplers (7205) and  three axels with spoke wheels are installed by me.

The different wheels:

The Märklin spare part number for the axel with spoke wheels is as far as I know 700230

DB H10 990 303 H, pair 3:

Theses are version 3 of Märklin 4697.  L = 2x 11,5 cm
the close couplers (7205) and four axels with spoke wheels are installed by me.

Additional car pairs, nice additions to the 2854 set:

Pair 4:
 Trix 24068.   DB H10 990 212 and 992 823

The cars are connected with a draw bar.  Normal couplers may be installed. L = 24,6 cm.
A small plastic bag with the posts is still in the Trix box.

A home made pair5:
made of Märklin 4684, DRG H10 14609 and Märklin 4697, DRG / DB H10 990201

The left car is the Märklin 4684.  The only modification is cutting the cradle side posts to adequate length to fit the pipe L = 2x 11,5 cm.
The right car is the Märklin 4697, with three modifications:
1: close couplers with Märklin 7205
2: cutting the cradle side posts to adequate length to fit the pipe
3: remove the braker's cab, by swapping platform parts with a Märklin 4779,  NSB tank carQ4 500125.

Mannesmann pipe for car pair 4:
The pipe comes from an old Kibri kit, an orange heavy duty pipe freight truck (I do not remember the Kibri number, it's packed down in s box somewhere. The pipe from the truck gave me the idea to use the two above cars as car pair 4 for the  2854 set.  The Kibri pipe is somewhat shorter than the Märklin pipe.

Additional cars:

In sddition I have  one Märklin 00750-6,and a Trix 4200-10, both Kbs from DB, numbered 333 4 459-7 and 333 1 210-7 respectively.
theThe only difference I can see between the two cars are the numbers and the AC/DC wheels.
Märklin 00750-6 and/or Trix 4200-10

This photo shows the Trix model.  These pipe cars are obviously based on Märklin 4459, L = 11,5 cm
I think these are a good supplement to the 2854 set.

The total train length is approx 159 cm.
