Hi,

Yesterday a wooden 1950s Faller station 113 "Cortina" was auctioned on German ebay.

Nothing special you might think, except that this Corina looks quite different from other Cortina's.

I have watched the photo's over and over again, the longer you look, the more differences you discover.

These early Faller models were assembled in the living rooms of home workers in and around Gutenbach, but the overall construction and looks of the models were the same.

The seller is located in Biberach in the Black Forest, just 25 kilometers from the Faller Factory in Gütenbach.

The griesputz (semolina plaster) looks restored, but what about the rest of this model ?

Is it a very clever restored Cortina, with the use of components from other Faller kits (maybe roof parts from B-217 ??)

Or... is it this the 1st factory prototype of Cortina ?????

Marco

When I feel grumpy or a bit depressed, this kind of Faller models with all those lovely little details can really cheer me up and make my day.
No pills or psychologist needed.

On the homepage of our dear forum member Wolfgang (username: Modell-railway-fan) I found some Cortina photo's that shows a lot of the differences that I mentioned in my 1st post. LINK to homepage Wolfgang

The Cortina station that you usually see, and also is shown on the homepage of Wolfgang, is much deeper than the ebay version, with a bigger window too, different glass entrance tower, different roofs, different base, different type of wood... etcetera

Left the 'normal' Cortina, on the right the 'ebay' variant....
Is it just a restoration project or a very rare factory prototype ? Confused

You might want to take a look at a similar question/discussion in this German forum: http://alte-modellbahnen...78-Cortina-Prototyp.html

They are also undecided between a restoration project and a prototype. Wink

Looks like a great topic for "history detectives". (I don't know if the program airs outside of the US so my apologies if you don't have any idea what I'm talking about.)

Hi Marco

Thanks for the post. ThumpUp

I too love seeing the older models, especially the very early wooden ones.

If it is an original 106 euros - that to me is good. For a replica - I'm not so sure.

cheers

Hi Mike,

I think for the Faller brothers, 'Cortina' was special too and was their 1956 flagship.

Here is a picture of the 1956 Nurnberg toy fair, where Edwin (on the left) and Hermann Faller (on the right) are showing new item Cortina to the puplic. (The two men in the middle are staff members of the German MIBA magazine).
It is one of the few pictures I have of the Faller brother, needless to say I cherish it.

I must say that the ebay model looks more like the one they are holding in the old pic...
Windows, doors, the "tunnel", the rounded "café" part and everything else...

A real original refurbished model or a kitbashed "fake"? Still hard to tell...

As a Faller devotee, I find the question intriguing.
Is it a factory prototype ? Or a replica or restoration project ?

There were two versions of the Cortina station.
The 1st version with wooden ('Sperrholz') walls and the later version with die cut carton walls ('Gemischtbauweise'), but both have the same shape which differs from the ebay model.

The ebay version has the wooden Sperrholz walls.
But on one of the pictures you can see that the ebay model has no mounting holes for the entrance tunnel, like the original Cortina has.

On the left the original Cortina with with red arrows pointing to the mounting holes, on the right the ebay model.

Two weeks ago I sent the seller Mr Jehle an email asking him for more information on the Cortina station.

Today I received a kind reply, in which Mr Jehle wrote that he had acquired the Cortina station from his neighbor who had the station stored, in unused untouched condition for more than 45 years.

So the mystery is not solved yet, but the station is certainly not some kind of restoration or replica project of the last 45 years and could be the
factory prototype model.
