<font face="Verdana]Thanks for the heads-up, I will definitely keep an eye on it. Not that I can afford it, mind you, as these items will probably fetch considerably more than 1,000 euros. But it is rare to see them offered for sale in this condition! I would be worried a little bit about forgeries though. I mean with this kind of money you need to be safe.</font id="Verdana]

Well,
I imagine if the numbers on the boxes are correct, they really are what they seem to be, and in that good condition. The reason I suggest this isn't so much the way the models themselves look in the photos, but the boxes. Those boxes look almost brand new, and I imagine the box would be harder to forge than the model.

If they are a serious ebay seller though, they should have no problem providing additional, and additional hi-res photos if politely requested.

<font face="Verdana][size=2]I'm not so sure of that actually. I've seen boxes that were quite likely to be a re-print of the classic Märklin boxes. I've also heard other people mention that boxes are sometimes re-printed and I've even seen an Ebay auction once where the seller said "Box in very good condition, probably a replica."

If this auction were in Europe, and if I could afford it, I would probably arrange with the seller to pick the items up instead of sending them through the mail. That's a good way to make sure. The chances are small, but for models this pricey you're better off safe than sorry.</font id="Verdana]

Oh, I agree completely. You'd be amazed at how well some people can forge Lionel items over here in the US. In fact, you can find plenty of info on the web to help you spot Lionel forgeries. A lot of forgeries are so subtle that the uninitiated would never spot them, even on close inspection, but someone who knows what to look for can spot it from across the room!

Is there such a guide for vintage Märklin items?

I don't think there is a guide like this for vintage Marklin items.

The problem is...if there was a guide it would allow the counterfeiters to perfect their models, finding what everyone is looking for in their fakes.

Yes but rare marklin items tend to be actually rare in individual. Like a Northlander or original 50's crocodile
Unlike Lionel which is often something like "its a green boxcar with a brown hobo figure and not a white hobo figure". Which is more like collecting a stamp or a coin with a misprint.

True, but I was thinking more along the lines of the 6468 Baltimore & Ohio automobile boxcar painted in Tuscan red rather than blue, or any pieces of the infamous "Girl's Train". If you don't know the originals that well, you can easily fall for a fake, because the only differences between those expensive models and the ones you can buy for less than $10 is the color of the paint.

I think the Inox "Mistral" coaches would suit it - these are what the Marklin ones shown in that photo are based on, except that Marklin only made one version. IIRC both L.S.Models and Jouef (as part of Hornby International) have made these as packs and add-on individual coaches.

In both cases you will want to use something like Fleischmann or Roco close couplers within the train, but keep the original Relex-type on the ends. Marklin close couplers seem to jam against the buffers on everyone else's products. A pity, as they're a very neat design combining close coupling and the ability to couple to standard Relex-type.

Hans, is the last coach in that train a Pocher model? I have a couple of CIWL sleepers made by them which have a similar look, although they're not the same.

Hello Matt,

it is indeed the Pocher model, I would not have thought that somebody could see this from my weak picture. Actually, the third from last car is also something weird here: it is from a company called Troby. The other wagons are Märklin 4050 or 4076 respectively.

And your answer towards John / River6109 is also very accurate, I would also recommend the Inox cars of different companies.

I have about 10 Pocher passenger wagons which I like very much. And also a few freight cars too. Pocher and Märklin cars blend very well in a traditional consist. Length and width are about equal, height is sometimes a little different as can be seen in the picture.

Off topic question: which turn outs did I use ?? (Those who saw the picture before elsewhere please do not spoil the fun !!!)

Many regards,

Hans

You've got about Euro 6000.00 on your track.

Hello John,

I can confirm that it is much less.

Indeed I just looked up my 1968 catalogue and found that the loco 3059 is worth DM 42,-- The cars 4075 are DM 8,50 each. That's DM 51,-- for six cars and altogether DM 93,-- for the whole train.

Or in other words I got about Euro 49.00 on my track. [:p]winkCool

But there is also something I wanted to ask you about your 3038 above. What happened to the paint ?? It does not so much look rusty but more as if some paint has come off in parts ?? Like some silvery spots or so, or maybe it is just the picture that deceives ... And is there some kind of logo in the middle of the loco side wall ?? If yes what does it depict ??

Many regards,

Hans

If you look at ebay you will find your train has gone up considerable.
Carriages around Euro 800.00 each and the loco can vary but nowhere your estimate.
As mentioned my loco has been almost around the world.
So it has had a lot of work done in the past.
I've converted the loco aswell and handling it all the time taking it in and out of the box had had its results.
the Logo (can't read it) in the middle I've found or was supplied with an other loco but can't remember which one.

I was thinking that one of the other coaches didn't look like the Marklin either, always interesting to see the smaller-scale producers. My pair of Pocher models are both CIWL blue sleepers, they're mostly sound but could do with a little bit of tidying up. Mine really need new gangways and centring springs for the couplers, along with a couple of replacement CIWL crests. I didn't pay much for them and I don't have anything for them to run with, so I'm not rushing to restore them. Most of my stock is 1970s or later.

The bogies were the giveaway as they look identical to my coaches: very solid sideframes and compensated to allow all four wheels to stay on the rails with rough track.

Is that a green 1101 in the background? Or does it have another number since it is supposed to be a SNCF loco in stead of a NS?

Dear Henk,

I am so sorry but I completely forgot about your question !!! It is indeed a green 1101 in my picture above. They did not bother to make different road numbers at this time. And the number 1101 isn't just printed but part of the mould, so it wouldn't have been easy anyway.

Many regards,

Hans
