I guess so Gary, unless there is a change of Government and they decide to change the name again [B)][:(]
I would have thought NZ Rail would have been logical but then I am a tax-payer not a tax-spender...

I'll ignore Nev's comment.
Just going to steal his pinny instead..

The shame of using the EO in the first place is that once again the wheel has turned full circle.
We used to have an 1800hp English Electric Class EW.
Lovely quiet and smooth running articulated Bo-Bo-Bo locos that were used during peak hour for suburban trains. They were scrapped in the late '80's. Far superior locos to the 1200hp EO's.

Aunty Helen wanted the name to carry the same theme as KiwiSaver and KiwiBank!

Well, as I said Macca, we could always replace the Toshies with E103's!

So, does Kiwirail only operate mainline services, or do they operate suburban services too (in the same way that DB operates S-Bahns for numerous city transport authorities)?

Gary, Tranz Metro operates commuter services in Wellington, and MAXX in Auckland.

In Wellington we are using a mix of Ganz Mavang EMU's which are now 25 years old, and General Electric EMU's which are anything between 50 - 70 years old (first placed in service in 1938). About 70 new EMU's have been ordered from Mitsui in Japan to replace the old English Electrics.

New Mitsui EMU's due to arrive in 2011. (Bombadier and CAF were the other 2 who tendered, Mitsui won the contract).

With the new rolling stock for wellington, would it be possible for Uncle Helen to have the system changed so that it is compatible with the rest of the Main trunk line?[:o)]

Thanks for the photos BD. I can see that the Class DMs are two car sets. The Class EMs look like three or even four car sets.

The EM's are a 2 car set, one powered, one trailer. 44 of each were ordered.

The Wellington commuter service runs on 1500v DC, The Main Trunk Line (the line from Wellington to Auckland) is electrified at 25000v AC.

Not much difference to Europe there. AFAIK Europe has 4 different voltages, 1500v DC, 3000v DC, 15000v AC and 25000v AC.

You can read about the North Island Main Trunk Line here:- http://en.wikipedia.org/...sland_Main_Trunk_Railway

Here's a piccie of how the English Electrics originally looked, this one has been restored. The were fondly called 'The Cyclops' because of the large single headlight! [Edit 15/09/2008] This train is in everyday use, I saw it running on the Hutt Valley line today.

This picture was taken on one of the platforms at Wellington Station.

The diver sat in a small cubicle on the right hand side in the direction of travel, the windscreen wiper gives the position away. The other window has had thousands of kids faces (including mine every chance I could get) peering out, in my case loving every set of points we went over.

Thanks for the link for the NI Main Trunk Line. Where on earth did the Ganz Mavang sets come from? I've never heard the name before.

BTW, the Main Trunk Line was completed in November 1908. So, this November celebrates 100 years since the line was completed. NZ Post are issuing some commemorative stamps.

Great picture Bigdaddynz

I use to ride these to high school in the mid to late seventies. It's been good following some of these threads of NZ trains of late.

Western line running as usual after collision
2:58PM Thursday Sep 18, 2008

Trains are running as usual on Auckland's western line after a collision between a car and a train earlier put a halt to services.

Sharon Hunter of the Auckland Regional Transport Authority said reports the line would be disrupted for the duration of the day were incorrect.

She issued a plea to motorists not to park on train tracks.

Did some intellectual giant actually park on the tracks?!? Is there no limit to the sheer, staggering and astonishing depth of human stupidity? And just think: Not only do people like this get driving licences, they also get the right to vote!!!

Mike,
I put the question to my captive train-nut here at work (Scott aka Donny)

Here is his reply:
Helen can order anything she wants (at least until 8 Novvy) but probably hasn't ever been asked.

In my opinion its pathetic that the Wellington system wasn't upgraded from 1500v DC to 25000v AC as per the trunk and Auckland will also (hopefully - If John Key allows it to go ahead) be 25000v AC. Not too mention that in such a small country Welly and Auckers should have got the same equipment fro simple logistic reasons of compatibility anyhow.

The only excuse is that all the overhead wires, poles, substations in Welly would have to be basically re-built at great cost to allow for 25000v AC. Also Welly is a couple of years ahead of Auckland in the process. They have already selected a supplier and let the tender. Auckland have done basically nothing.

Make sense!

Hey Dave (or other Wellingtonian)
The other week when I was down, I finally rode the rails to Silverstream to see big (very ill) sister.
On the way back to Wellybob, south of the Kaiwharawhara Station, at the Freight Yard switch-out by the Aotea Quay Overbridges, I noticed that the rails were rust-free. All of the rail.

Anyone know what they are made of???

Supposidly the "new train" will start running on 1 December between Welly and Upper Hutt.

Three loco's look like they have been refurbished, while the other two are sitting looking a bit worse for wear!
