Hello,
I am considering replacing the motors of two trains I have purchased cheaply on ebay with 5 pole motors.
Where do you buy your 5-pole motors? And, how hard is it to do this? Do I need special tools?
Thanks! :)

Eric - I presume you are going digital. Check this site http://www.hfkern.gmxhome.de/ for the type of motor in the locomotive: SFCM, LFCM or DCM. There should be a Märklin Dealer in your neck of the woods if you want to stay Märklin. I believe here are a few: http://www.marklin.com/c...mber=LOCATE&state=vaIf you can find a 60901, 60903, or 60904, you can update to 5 pole digital and not pay the premium for MFX. Additionally, check for ESU decoders and motors. Same as Märklin only cheaper. |

Please bear in mind Eric, that the site Robert refers to is about 85% correct, but there are errors. So, to double check, you could post pictures, and details of the loco, and I'm sure forum members collectively can help you identify the motor type.
However, you have posted this query in the Z Scale section of the forum, so are you enquiring about replacement motors for Z scale locos? In that case, I'm not sure if they are available.
The kit numbers Robert refers to are for HO locos.

I should've read the forum category! If you grow to HO, you'll be prepared!

If I may try again, I did find this: http://eurorailhobbies.c...ilhobbies.asp?PageID=171Euro Rail Hobbies is in Canada so my first post with the link for Märklin Dealers to get the parts is still good for dealers in VA. As to special tools and difficulty, the above link does mention complexity and size as an issue. |

No, it's very easy. Just lift the old one out and put the new one in. |

There ia a dealer in the US who stocks all the motors and brushes. If you try to replace the armature in your BR89 (8800, 88051), it's better to let a pro do it, unless you have special tools.
