Hi to all,

I have seen this set on an eBay auction. The listing said it is a Marklin but I wonder if it really is. Does anybody know anything about this set?

http://marklinciyiz.biz/index.p...amp;id=121&Itemid=61

Regards,

Cem.

I think the child used the rope to front loco for pulling it on carpet.

As you can see no flanged wheels.

Hi Steve,

Yes, that's what i thought too; it might even be a pre 1891 toy. couldn't find no info though.

Hi Cem,

it is a so named "Bodenläufer" (floor-runner: Train which does not need rails, I don't know the exact English word) from ~ 1895-1900. It is a later version of the train (appeared at Marklin in 1891) using already the newer couplers.

A catalogue picture can be found at "Technisches Spielzeug im Wandel der Zeit. Volume 3: Märklin -die Spielzeugeisenbahnen 1891 bis 1915" on page 52. Sorry, my scanner does not work in the moment.

Thanks Markus for helping out with this difficult stuff, so it is a genuine M-train and not some "fraud" - right?

Hi Juhan,

sorry, my first message was not exact: Yes, I am sure it is Marklin.

These sand-trains are very much rarer than other versions of these trains from the same period: They were intended for use outdoors in the sand-box or at the strand. So they rusted away.

At EUR 1.561,51 the buyer made real bargain.

Markus hit this one right on the money! It is very rare in this condition. The simple construction, couplers, and style do suggest that it was made Pre 1900 as said before. The buyer made an excellent buy...

Thanks for bringing this one up!
