G'day everyone,

I have spotted some Marklin 460 SBBs on eBAY. They have an 8xxxx number..

What's HAMO and are they AC three rail or a predcessor of the TRIX line?

Thanks
Adrian

HAMO are DC locos, made by Märklin before they bought TRIX.
So they have no slider, no relay, but a DC motor (normally). There is a rather large chance that they are easily converted to 3R operation.

Thanks Lars..

Is there a set that you can order to make the conversion (eg like the digital conversion sets that come with the motor)??

HAMO was manufacturer that Märklin bought in the 60:s, I think... The Märklin 2-rail DC loks were called HAMO until they bought Trix a couple of years ago. After the Trix merger, the HAMO loks were incorporated into Trix line of loks...

Basically HAMO loks are Märklin 2-rail DC locos with a Märklin motor - but using a "HAMO magnet" (discussed in many digital conversion scenarios) instead of the normal 2-coil stator of the "AC" motor in the Märklin catalog.

The other difference is that the wheelsets are isolated, as they must be when running 2-rail DC.

Since HAMO locos are originally Märklin locos, but adapted for 2-rail, normally there are already holes for the pick up slider mounting and such, so a reverse engineering effort to "restore" it to 3R operation is not such a big job, as Lars also points out.

With the SBB 460, you could get the 60901 set and install it after rewiring the internals & adding the pick up shoe, or use a LokPilot or similar - in case of keeping the original motor...

If you want to run it as a "pure AC" lok, then you will have to replace the "HAMO magnet" with a coil stator and add a reversion relay, but I think a LokPilot would be the better/easiest option in that case too, while keeping the original motor...

And - if you get them - and wonder more about on how to make them run, we are here to help you...wink

Thanks everyone..

It will be a while before I go down this path.. I already have 4 loks (one is not even announced yet) that are waiting in line for me to buy from my dealer in the near future.. Noel is still stressing over my last request to have telex couplers installed on the two 460s I already own.. After I buy next 4 loks, I might look deeper into the idea as it seems to be a cheaper way to increase the loco population..
