I'm just coming back to railroading and have decided to re enter the digital age with 3 rail marklin as the base. Just before I left the hobby in England (I am now in Australia) I bought 6021, and a dozen or so locos with the 6020 decoder etc - but have many Hamo locos. How easy is it for me to add a slider and put in an ESU sound decoder to these? Are there any diagrams available to assist me please?

Hi Greg - and a warm welcome to the forum!
It is very easy to convert HAMO locos to 3-rail. All you have to do is unscrew the wheel pickup and replace it with a conventional slider. That's the 3-rail to 2-rail bit done.
As for the decoder, you'll probably find a wiring diagram on the ESU website (http://www.loksound.de/download/anleitungen/5260x_LokPilot+LokPilotDCC_V20_ESUKG_US_Betriebsanleitung_Auflage_IV_ebook.pdf). I recommend that, where space permits, you fit an 8-pole NEM652 socket into the loco where the decoder plugs in; this makes experimenting with different decoders much easier.
Please note that HAMO locos with the small flat commutator motor (SFCM) do not run as well in digital as those with the large commutator (LFCM). So I suggest you try an LFCM loco first.
If you need any more help, just post your questions here, and someone will get back to you I'm sure! |
