Can anyone tell me what is the best method of cleaning excess glue from plastic models?

Prevention of excess glue is the best method. I use Tamiya bottled glues which come i various consistencies. They come in bottles, and the cap has some good brushes. That way applicatio is very easy tp control.

what kind of glue is it. for super glues (CA) use fingernale polish remover works good in an emergancy. and if your fingers are now stuck to the keys of the key board turn off the computer first.[:p] |

As I understand it, the glues form Faller, Kibri, Revell, etc. for plastics works by dissolving the plastic (styrene) ad thereby letting pieces "melt" together. There is therefore no glue to remove; it´s all totally absorbed into the plastic.
(Not talking about CA here (aka "crazy-glue")
So the answer must be, that imperfections caused by glue can only be removed mechanically (file, cut, or by painting it over.

The Dane in Spain is correct.
The only way with plastic (styrene glues) is to cut, or file over the unsightly glue parts.
You can paint over, using a colour like the plastic, or maybe use a weathering technique on that part.
Using a sharp hobby knife in a scraping motion is quite effective.
I believe most of us modellers accept that minor glue marks are normal on a model.
If you want to use the model for photographic purposes, it is best to remove or cover the glue marks.
