Convert Marklin locos (3 rail) to 2-rail?

Joined: 03/12/2024(UTC) Posts: 4 Location: Ha Noi, Hanoi		Hello I am new to the forum. I have a collection of H0 scale locomotive models from Roco and Trix (2-rail, DC and DCC+Sound). I run them on H0 layout (E-Z bachmann track), using Z21 controller, Bachmann for DC. I do not have any AC (3-rail) models from Marklin or other brands. My friend recently gave me some AC (3-rail) models from Marklin, all diesel locomotives, H0 scale. I have 2 options 1. Buy more Marklin tracks and controls to create a layout independent of the existing layout? 2. Convert the other Marklin locos to 2-rail to operate on the existing layout? Which option do you think should I choose? Thanks

You probably need at least a lathe for converting the wheels. Here is an example of a 3-rail to 2-rail conversion of an old H0 scale Märklin German class 81 three-axle steam locomotive - see two videos in German language:

For the wheels I think it is simple because now shops sell AC and DC wheels to install when needed. Mainly the motor. If the motor uses AC input, then maybe we have to replace it completely or use a DC converter to take the power from the wheel to AC?

Some folks use AC for analogue operation, some use DC for analogue operation. Decoders always use DC to run those. For better performance, replace the field coil with a permanent magnet.
