Hi
I am trying to muddle all the parts together to build a little model z layout.
A single loop with landscaping is all I aspire to at this point.
I would like to have a elevation change through a mountain and tunnel if possible.
Woodland scenics make Styrofoam risers for HO that helps make this easy.
What do you use to gain elevation since I can't seem to find anything useful?
The Marklin pillars don't seem like a good solution.
Noch sell a really nice product with all the pieces to do the kind of layout I imagine, but I don't think it is within my current budget.
Thanks for your time.

Hello, hope all is well.

I am not sure I have seen a raisers kit for z scale. Perhaps there is one for N which could be used. I will continue to search for something, but it is possible many have gotten out of the Z Scale product line recently.

With the small Z scale locomotives you might want to be careful with how much elevation changes you build in. Traction is an issue with any rise and should be limited to a 2 or 3% change. If you like longer trains, anything over this could create issues and limit the potential of the locomotives. Of course. Two locomotives would make a difference and some use traction wheels.

One thing I discovered, once you get into it, you might want a bit more interest than a simple loop will provide. You can fit greater detail and interest in a smaller space with Z, go for it. Here is the track planning guide, it has many ideas to consider and tells you about some of the benefits of Marklin track. It’s a big file, give it extra time to download to your equipment.

Search track plan to find another more complete guide: I was going to link it here, but continued to receive an error.

Hope this helps. Take good care.

PS. Here is a source for raisers: BigGrin

2% maximum grade for Z gauge otherwise you are going to get frustrated, even then it is still annoying. Z scale locos just don't have enough mass for longer trains. Raise the entire track so scenery is above & below the track. Plywood strips & offcuts spacers underneath & if seen make some supports out of timber or high impact styrene yourself.

These concrete walls & supports I made up myself & spray painted with 150g touch-up cans.

Road & tunnel portals were also custom made & spray painted with touch-up cans.

Hi
Thanks for all the useful information relating to grade and the engines ability to pull.
I like the idea of having two separate loops with one of them elevated.
That gives me something to consider in planning.

The tips/considerations mentioned by those above I used in my relatively large Z scale layout. I have the track looping over itself and no more than a 2% incline (especially important when using the tightest Maerklin radii track and/or longer consists).

I used some leftover Woodland Scenics 2 degree riser material that I trimmed down to an appropriate Z scale track width. The remainder that I needed I hand made from sturdy insulation foam.

Ralph.
