Well, BigDaddy - for running an BB double-header I definitely were in need of a big layout.
Still more, guess by next year the Grandkids' layout is due for construction, anyway [:p]
And I'm way too lazy for building a third !!! [xx(][xx(][xx(]
So my micro layout with only one BB is just fine for me ...

Right, Jeroen - €370 are some money. Well,
if
getting it another problem were space.

But, frankly - I had hoped for some RIO GRANDE or SOUTHERN PACIFIC freight cars.
Since we have bought M's $$$$$$ ALCO double-header Diesels, anyway ...

370 is the suggested price, the actual i expect to be around 330.
At last now M seems to have a tendency to create more box cars in different liveries.

Even €330 is a lot of money, especially in comparison with the Trix 20-car sets that can be snatched from Ebay at €210 (UP) or €219 (various). I do not know the price of Märklin couplers or AC wheel sets, but a lot of money is left for those if you look at the price difference. Compare also with 45646 that originally cost more than €200 but was offered for something like €130 not long ago.

Today after one year of MRR idleness, i used my layout, of course some parts of the tracks were full of dust, my new br 218 39183 could not handle it and stopped at these sections, but that was not the case for the Alaska loco the 3663 which had no problem at all.

The derailment sensitivity is an issue for all f7s though. These locos detest curves and turnouts.

Right, Nikos. But only if you run 'em coupled
BACK TO BACK
[xx(][xx(][xx(] - the way M delivers them ...
Such double-header configuration is extremely prone to derailments (same goes for PA1s).
That's why I run ALL my U.S. double-header Diesels this way (BTW - both are correct, protypically).
Also prefer the looks. No derailments, ever since
(and of course never happened with solo locos).

An option, Nikos - but slow speed works only with F7s on C-track
[^]
(if I had known before I had built all levels with troublefree C-track)
On K-track
regular
turnouts back-to-back F7s do derail even at the slowest speed [:I]
And on C-track
curved
turnouts
(WORST !!! piece of track, ever - on such even
my Grandson's simple V100 derails)
back-to-back PA1s give the same trouble [:I]
All this regardless of direction. That's why I had to change (some work) [xx(] all double-headers ...

Hi John,
I've got a lot of F7 doubles and triples and run them on C and M track. I have never noticed a derailing problem. Is this a K track thing or am I just lucky?

Hi Eric,
my layout's analog base level is K, and this is where I run most of my F7s (they are analog).
It must be a K-track thingy. Perhaps because of the somewhat tighter tolerances ...
Running a solo F7 over a K-turnout (no matter if slowly or full throttle) - no trouble at all
[^]
But the very moment I try this with two back-to-back coupled F7s - they derail ... [:I][:I]
You even can observe the two motorized (inner) bogies' inability for easy lateral movement.
Although the bogies' frame "bearings" (big word for two simple pieces of sheet metal) are
well greased, a combo of two coupled heavy bogies simply won't work reliably on K-turnouts.
My best guess: two heavy motor bogies plus a rather tightly built turnout make no love affair ...
No problems on the (upper digital) C-track level with my SANTA FE or ALASKA double-headers
[^]
(I just try to avoid those funny curved turnouts - they give me trouble all the time)
Guess we can rest assured with our C-track, Eric. If I had known before also my analog level were C.
Talk about learning by doing ...
John

I have some F7's.
My old layout was a mix of K and C-track. Only tight curves.
Never problems with derailments, no matter what combination.
However. After an accident with the T&P F7, that loco was always deraling. So i checked it up cloosely.
The investigation showed that one of the locomotives axel/wheel back-to-back measure was to big! This occured after the accident with the T&P F7.
After adjustment to the right back-to-back measure there was no problem.
CONCLUSION. The wheels don't sit tight on some of the F7's. They can sometimes easely slide on the axle, change the back-to-back measure, and cause a derailment.

Thanks, Caboose. Will check this ...
But then those back-to-back derailments happened with brand new out-of-the-box locos.
Never came back when switched to the double-header combo as shown above. Strange ...

Just spotted the first solid discount for the 45649 car set, priced at €299.90. Still a bit steep, but ...

Thank you Panayioti
, now i want that new ten wagon set, the 45649, since you do have the 37491 you should start buying US stuff too...
Ps: I am lucky not having bought that set 2 months before, cause my dealer now decided to split his sets.
I saved 200 euros, i will get the 29841 with what i saved, only the wagons and the loco for 180 euros.
Panayioti you should see his new offers at his website

, now i want that new ten wagon set, the 45649, since you do have the 37491 you should start buying US stuff too...
Ps: I am lucky not having bought that set 2 months before, cause my dealer now decided to split his sets.
I saved 200 euros, i will get the 29841 with what i saved, only the wagons and the loco for 180 euros.
Panayioti you should see his new offers at his website

Right, Nikos. They had way more just a few years back ...
Now they do concentrate on less items - but most of them are real bargains
Guess today's dwindling sales force them keeping a low stock to overcome the crisis ... [:I]

Have a look Panayioti:
http://www.modeltrains.gr/
The PA-1 is for me, the worst motorized US item, too much noise, not enough pulling power, the motor is unable to cope with the engine's weight.

I'm surprised that not many people seem to fit Kadees to their Marklin models. If you use the NEM pocket sort they'll go on without altering the model, and when properly set up they're very reliable. Just make sure you get genuine Kadees as the others are nothing like as good.

That's a very nice set of US freight wagons, Nikos.
All from the locality of NE USA, to suit the GG1.
Yes, the trouble free running certainly outweighs the mild distraction of outsize flanges.

Kimball

Thank you Kimball, the only problem is that my layout is getting smaller and smaller.

John,
Thanks for a great thread. The AT&SF F7 was my first US lok and still my favorite. I have been looking around for a 37622 boxed set with no luck. (I have seen an unboxed set) For those who follow the 37622, what has been the recent market prices?
Regards,
Thomas

I believe Thomas it is around 350 euros.
I got mine for 300, some years ago, but she was part of the 29848 set.
